Ken Ryning's email of April 19 2024 noted: .. "From our family history book we record the following:
° Johan Martin Rønning (b) 1858-11-06 (m) 1881-08-27 (d) 1928-12-09
° Iona (Jona) Sophie Pettersen (b) 1857-03-08 (m) 1881-08-27 (d) 1933-03-03
... having immigrated 1881-09-08 from Trondheim aboard steamship Tasso to Hull, and from Glasgow aboard steamship Anchoria. Arrived at Castle Garden Immigration Station, New York 1881-09-28. Settled in Brooklyn; Johan worked as a stevedore. First baby born and died in infancy 1882 (William ?). Relocated to Morris, Stevens County, Minnesota where Alfrida Sophie Rønning was baptised. Her baptisimal certificate from the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church states her date of birth as 1883-05-30 and baptismal date of July 1883 with no day. Godparents J. S. Pettersen, Jonetta Pettersen and Ingolf Pettersen (parents and brother of Iona). ° I am wondering if the child that was born on June 22 1882 was actually a girl that they named Alfrida but she died shortly afterwards. The date of their arrival in Morris, MN is not stated only that they lived in Brooklyn for "approximately two years" before they left for Minnesota. Whether Iona was pregnant with her second child (Alfrida Sophie) at that time is also not clear. ° The Rønning name is definitely on the Anchoria passenger list and both Alfrida's and Henry's Baptismal Certificates that I have photocopies of. That is why I am questioning the surname of Rynning. Since Rynning is also a Norwegian surname I am surmizing that the immigration/registration officer at the time could not understand Johan and Iona and wrote down his phonetic interpretation of the name Rønning. This inference was also told to me by my uncle John Ryning." °
Comment: Whether there is any actual inconsistency in the Record of Alfrieda Garland's birth. re. place and dates of Alfrieda's i.e. as was recorded (in Minnesota in 1883) by the family, and an earlier event -the birth in June 1882 of a baby Alfrieda's parents named 'Alfrida', born to Johan and Iona, registered in N.Y. (Birth Certificate 4866) when living in New York City, is a moot point, and almost certainly, not any issue; the baby born in N.Y. within twelve months of reaching America also being baptised in N.Y. -for whom also refer to 'Norway Church Recds. 1812-1938 re: her baptism & see N.Y. Birth regn. of the baby -both sources. What is missing here is the child's death certificate. ° In this Profile of Alfrieda Garland the Family recdorded and long-recognised date of birth is what appears : - Alfrieda's -birth place, Duluth, and date in May 30, 1883. See further the 1895 Census, putting Alfreida's age at the date of that record, June 1st 1895, as 12 years of age & her Recd. of Death, confirming the 1883 birth date: The Ancestry Search for the Lutheran Church Baptism Record was:
