Alice ( Dillon ) Churchill was born October 27th 1850 in Chesterfield County Virginia. She was the sixth of ten children born to Edward H. Dillon & Pheobe ( Carpenter ) Dillon. The ONLY girl. At the start of the Civil War, She would have been about 11 years old with two younger brothers, two brothers that died in infancy and five brothers ranging in age from 14 years old to 27.
Her future husband, Charles Carrol Churchill , was serving in the First Connecticut Heavy Artillery, in the Civil War, during the siege of Petersburg Virginia . How they met may be apocryphal , but the story passed through the family was that he was stationed to guard the family home.Their "Romeo & Juliet" romance was unusual to say the least with at least three of her brothers and untold uncles & cousins fighting for the south. They did not elope as was the family family tale, but were married in Chesterfield County Virginia . July 1st 1869. She was 19 years old.He was 29.
She was also not ostracized by her family as lore had it, as she is also mentioned in her fathers will. The couple did move back to Connecticut, to Harwinton in Litchfield County , where they had a farm. They had five Children , All boys. Edward N. Churchill was the first born ( June 1870 ) . He married Charlotte and had no children. He lived to be 60 years old. The second born was Alma P. Churchill ( March 1878 ), who died as a child. The last born was William Davis Churchill ( Aug 1889 ), No children
Life on the family farm in the late 19th , early 20th century must have been hardscrabble. According to census reports, In 1900 , at age fifty, she was living as a housekeeper ( with ten year old son "Willie" ) in Thomaston Ct , in the home of Edgar & Anna Post . Her husband Charles died in 1908 at age 67. She would spend the next 27 years as a widow. She died on Valentines Day 1932 age 81.
