Charles Carrol Churchill was born ( 9/17/1840 ) in the Campville section of Harwinton,Connecticut. He would spend his entire life here ,save the time served in the Civil War. He served in the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery ( company I ) from Dec 15th 1863 - Sept 25th 1865. Nine months of this time ( June 1864 - March 1865 ) would be in what would be known as " The Seige of Petersburg". This was one of the first instances of trench warfare . He would have also been involved in what was latter called "The Battle of the Crater" where the Union forces tunneled underneath Confederate lines planting explosives. The explosion was a success but the resulting attack a failure. Somehow 25 year old Charles met a young Alice Dillon who had an Uncle and three brothers fighting for the South. Family lore had it that she was ostracized by her family but this doesn't seem to have been true. She was married in Petersburg ( 7/1/1869 ) long after the war and she is also mentioned in her fathers will.
The couple returned to Campville where they lived just up the road from his father David.
