About Alice Hadley

ALICE (AUDLEY) HADLEY / Circa 1458 - 1524

Posited in this profile as a daughter of Sir Humphrey Audley (Circa 1434 - 1471) and Elizabeth (Courtenay) Luttrell (1430 - 1493). Per this profile, Alice Audley was born in 1458 in Malden Bradley (Wiltshire).

It is worth noting, however, that Elizabeth's first husband, Sir James Luttrell (Circa 1426 / 1427 - 1461), was a Lancastrian partisan during the War of Roses and died of wounds received at the Battle of St. Albans (Hertfordshire) on February 17, 1461. While the date of her second marriage to Sir Humphrey (Tuchet) Audley is not clearly documented, the year 1462 is suggested. Based on an overly close consanguinity, both Sir Humphrey and Lady Elizabeth were excommunicated from the Roman Church. Absolved and reinstated in the Church by papal edict in 1463, they were allowed to 'legally' marry, with issue to their marriage deemed legitimate.

Lady Audley's second marriage was relatively short lived, as Sir Humphrey Audley was also a Lancastrian partisan. Captured at the Battle of Tewkesbury on May 4, 1471, Sir Humphrey was tried as a traitor and beheaded. It is worth noting that, as a son of Lancastrian partisan James Tuchet, 5th Baron Audley (Circa 1398 - 1459) and his second wife, Eleanor de Holland (Circa 1406 - 1459), Sir Humphrey Audley was never in line to succeed his father as the 6th Baron Audley. The title descended to Sir Humphrey's older half brother (son of Margaret de Ros), John Tuchet (1423 - 1490). John Tuchet, despite his partisan Lancastrian family, was able to succeed to the Barony of Audley by virtue of his capture in Calais in 1460 and defection to the Yorkist cause after an audience with the future King Edward IV.
