About Alice Geneva Howton

Biography

Alice Geneva Estes was born on 26 December 1874 at Caldwell, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and died 1 July 1951 at Lind, Adams County, Washington, where she is buried, in the Delight Cemetery.

Alice was the daughter of Homer Reuben Estes and Nancy Eveline Greer. She migrated with her family to Cornwall, Latah County, Idaho from North Carolina before 23 February 1894, the date she married Abijah John Dee Columbus Howton. A farmer from Madisonville, Kentucky, he was the son of James Henry Howton, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Louvina Ross.

Their nine children were:

  1. Ida Elizabeth Howton
  2. Ruth (Howton) Reeve
  3. Eunice (Howton) Shimek
  4. Lois (Howton) Leavell
  5. Lloyd Lee Howton
  6. Geneva (Howton) Jolly
  7. Florence Howton
  8. Doris Martha Howton
  9. Norman Estes Howton.

Apparently the couple separated by 1927, as John Howton lived with his daughter Ruth and her husband John Shimek on the Beckley ranch from then until his death in 1930.
