About Alice Bain Mills

BIRTH & BAPTISM First name(s) Alice Bain Last name Mills Sex Unknown Birth year 1886 Birth place Toolamba Father's name Thomas Mother's name Rachel Burton Registration number 6782 State Victoria Country Australia Alice's second name is registered as Bain, rather than Bayne, which seems to have been the Scottish spelling, although spellings did not get standardised until the C19th as the generational changes to the Laurance family name show.

Alice, and her mother Rachel, wrote short family histories when in old age.

These have been passed down, and I have copies of both from Gail Hillbrick's collection, that I will include in the tree where they fit. Alice begins with Thomas Mills in C18th Halstead, Essex, then to Thomas John, her grandfather, in Collingwood. She then adds a short bio of her mother, Rachel, nee Burton.

Maffra Spectator 4 August 1904 Miss Alice Mills earned 92.5pts of 100 pts possible (second in the class) as a student cheese maker at Boisdale Cheese Factory. There is a good chance this is our Alice learning to make cheddar at the factory up the road.

Maffra Spectator 29 Sept 1910 ORANGE BLOSSOMS. HERBERT-MILLS. [COMMUNICATED.] On Thursday, 15th inst., a wedding which caused much interest locally took place in the Presbyterian Church, Briagolong, when Alice Bayne, third daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Mills, of "Mill Bank," Briagolong, was united in holy wedlock with John Beale, fourth son of the late Mr J. Herbert, of Kew. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion by the friends of the bride, and the ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr Jolly, Baptist Minister, of Sale. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in a dress of white silk, which was beautifully hand embroidered. She also wore orange blossoms, wreath and veil, and carried a bouquet of white heath and smilax. The bridesmaids, Misses Belle and Jessie Mills, sisters of the bride, were handsomely attired in cream frocks, and wore pink hats. They both carried bouquets of white flowers. Mr G. Hergt, of Kew, acted as best man, while Mr John Mills officiated as groomsman. The bridal party left the church to the strains of the Wedding March, played by Miss Whaley, the church organist. A number of guests were entertained at the breakfast at "Mill Bank" at which the usual toasts were honored. The happy couple left by the afternoon train amid showers of confetti, &c., en route for Mount Macedon, where the honeymoon was to be spent. The bride travelled in a dress of navy blue silk. The bridegroom's gifts to the bridesmaids were gold brooches, and to the best man and groomsman gold sleeve-links. The presents, which were both numerous and costly, included some from different parts of the Commonwealth, England, India, Thibet, Singapore and New Zealand.
