Birth: 1604 Ipswich Suffolk, England Death: Aug. 5, 1691 Charlestown Suffolk County Massachusetts, USA

Alice was the daughter of Nicholas Sharpe and Agnes Tyrrell of Ipswich, Suffolk, England. She married at age 17, Robert Rand of Ipswich. Robert Rand, immigrant ancestor, came from England , probably in 1635 , and settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts, where his wife Alice was admitted to the church in that year and where in the following year their son Nathaniel was born. Her sister Mary was the wife of Captain Richard Sprague.

Alice Sharpe Rand's sister was Mary Sharpe Sprague whose husband was

Captain Richard Sprague. Richard and Mary Sprague left leagacies in their

wills to various members of the Rand family.

It is also conceivable that the reason that no shiplist record is

available for Robert and Alice Rand is because they may have found

unofficial passage under Captain Sprague's auspices. It was common in the

day that in order to escape high taxes many families would find unofficial

passage to New England. In addition the price of passage was secured

through indemnature, which was to be worked off in the New Land. After

sufficient time and payments, the man under indemnature would be declared

"free" by a court order. We know this to be true of the Rands because it

was not Robert but his son, Thomas, who was declared a "freeman". It

appears that since Robert died before he could pay off his indemnature,

Thomas had to continue to work it off, whether in fact that indemnature

was to Captain Sprague or another financial sponsor.

Alternately, according to THE SPRAGUES OF MALDEN, a genealogical work

on the Sprague family, Alice Rand was sister to Mary Sprague, the wife of

Captain Richard Sprague (1605-1668). Mary's maiden name is claimed to be

Mary Morton indicating that Alice's maiden name was Alice Morton, not

Sharpe?
