Allen, the oldest child, was born in Pendleton district, South Carolina, in 1802. He was appointed first postmaster of Walton's Ford, Pickens District, South Carolina, in 1833, and also engaged in the mercantile trade. In 1836 Allen Elston brought his family to Benton County and purchased a large plantation near Mallory's Mill, now Downing Mill. He...operated his farm successfully. In addition he taught school in Choccolocco Valley for a number of years. He died in 1879 and was buried with Masonic honors in the family burial ground.
His first wife, Martha Humphreys, died in 1855. She possesed many fine qualities and, like her husband, was noted for her charity. They had a family of ten children, the first six born in South Carolina and the last four born in Benton County.
Following his wife's death, Allen Elston married Miss Minerva Gibson of Tennessee. There were no children from this union.
