'A.G. Nance Dies At Home After Long Illness'
Alvey G. Nance, well-known Corning businessman for over a half century, died at his home on West Third Street early Thursday morning December 20, after a lengthy illness that had confined him to his home for the past several months. Mr. Nance was one of Corning's early meat market owners, operating his own business establishments for many years. In later years, before ill health forced his retirement, he operated a food store on First Street and helped other merchants operate their markets. He also was helpful in many ways throughout a long span of years in assisting others in advice and finance in their business operations. He was born at Greensboro, N.C. December 3, 1881, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Nance. Mrs. Nance preceded him in death January 1, 1953. He was a member of the Corning Methodist Church. He came to Corning at the age of 12. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Earl Day, city, Mrs. J. H. Parkinson, Caruthersville, Mrs. Leon Williamson, Biggers; two brothers, Ben Nance of Corning, Calif. and Frank Nance of Covina, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Stinton and Mrs. Nina Parker, San Jose, Calif, Mrs. Bessie Borene, Bemidji, Minn.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services were conducted by the Reverend Byron McSpadden at the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon. Burial was in Corning Cemetery. Russell Ermert Funeral Service.
