Alwyn van Zyl (1941 - 2020)

Brief overview:

Oom Alwyn (79), and his wife Rene (66), were attacked on their farm, situated in Badselhoop, Naboomspruit (Mookgophong), by six perpetrators in the early hours of Friday 20th March 2020. Alwyn was strangled to death in his bed. Rene, survived the attack, but seriously traumatized after she was tied up with shoelaces.

Provincial Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Jacques Smalle expressed his sympathy to the family this morning in a press release. He said that the killers escaped with household items.

Provincial police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed the incident and that three suspects aged between 26 and 34 have been arrested by the police in Naboomspruit near Modimolle. Ngoepe says they will be charged with murder, attempted murder and house robbery.

  • 13/03/2023: "It was reported by Oorgrens Veiligheid that a farm murder suspect was among the six prisoners that were freed by a group of heavily armed suspects who attacked and shot at Police members transporting awaiting trial prisoners. The six were freed by the gang on the morning of Monday 13 March 2023. The attackers then took the six prisoners and sped off in a grey Mercedes Benz and a white Toyota Bakkie. The incident occurred along the Vivo road next to the first Schoemansdal turnoff outside Louis Trichardt. The one suspect, also known as Thabang, was among the six that were freed. He is an outstanding suspect wanted for the farm murder of Alwyn van Zyl (79) and for seriously injuring his wife Rene van Zyl (66). Forward Shumba (26), Shingirai Nyandome (32), Brilliant Sibanda (26), Erick Sithole (35), Moses Zambara (32), Alex Nkomo (35) - All escapees are Zimbabwean nationals."

  • Judge Matsaro Violet Semenya found Tatenda Lebogang Mongwenya, Lloyd Madumba and Yaganias Saga guilty in the High Court in Polokwane on Monday 25th April 2022. She sentenced the three men to life imprisonment each for the murder of Alwyn, as well as 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, five years imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to rob and one year imprisonment for assault. Mongwenya was also found guilty of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition for which he was sentenced to a further ten years and five years in prison respectively.
