Amanda Melvina was born September 11, 1822 in Lewis, Essex County, New York. In 1832 her father purchased a "Book of Mormon" from a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and the family was soon converted and baptized as members. A few years later, they gathered with the Saints in Missouri, settling in Nauvoo, Illinois.

In December of 1841, Amanda's sister, Rosalie Elvira, passed away in Adams County, Illinois. Six months later, on June 26, 1842, Amanda was married to her sister's widowed husband, Joseph Harrison Tippets. She reared her sister' two children, Joseph Mahonri and Caroline Cornelia.

After the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, her family was driven from their Nauvoo home. They settled for five years near Council Bluffs in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. They crossed the plains with the John B. Walker Wagon Company and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on October 5, 1852.

Just a little over three months after their arrival, she gave birth to her fifth child. Once they were in the Salt Lake Valley, they settle first in Farmington, Utah and later in Brigham City. She gave birth to nine children of her own. Amanda was a devoted wife and mother and performed all the necessary and tedious jobs to keep her children well and happy. She was accidentally shot in her own home and passed away three days later on October 18, 1864. She was buried in the Brigham City Cemetery.

A more detailed narrative of her life can be found in the biography of her husband, Joseph Harrison Tippets born June 4, 1814 died October 12, 1868. To date I have found three different Tippets men with this name, but born in different eras, and not necessarily father to son, but instead - cousins.
