Ambrose Burnside was a Private with the 73rd Regiment that came out from the UK to Sydney on the "Anne" 27th Feb 1810. He was 49??[31yrs] at the time and brought with him his wife and children.

Ambrose is listed as being paid from Police Funds for fencing the Government Domain at Parramatta 28th January 1815. In 1823 he was granted 100 acres of land "anywhere in the colony" [28th October 1823].

Ambrose was appointed a constable at Windsor 9th February 1825, but resigned 16th April 1825 and died in 1827 aged 66??48yrs.

His wife Sarah applied to put their youngest child Anne in the orphans school soon after his death. Anne committed "highway robbery' in 1834 at the age of 15, was convicted and sent to Tasmania.

Ambrose Burnside, private in the 73rd Highland Regiment, who arrived in 1810 aboard the "Anne " with his wife Sarah. Ambrose was discharged from the Army in 1823 and was offered 100 acres "anywhere in the colony". He selected the land in the Bathurst region of NSW, BUT doesn't seem to have moved his family to the new land. Ambrose was briefly a Policeman in Windsor, before dying there in 1827 at the age of 66. I have seen the correspondence between Ambrose's widow Sarah and the Governor, in which she is begging to be allowed to take up the Bathurst land grant. She says she is a "healthy women" with five "lively children", but this didn't work. One letter I read is from one petty government official to another stating "The women is a nonsense if she believes she has the funds" to take up the grant.

I must admit feeling very sorry for poor Sarah. The family went down hill after Ambrose's death. Their youngest daughter Ann ended up in the Orphan School in Parramatta and in 1834 at the age of 15 ,she committed "highway robbery " at Windsor, was caught and transported to Tasmania. I've traced Sarah and Ambrose's other three daughters, Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary, but mother Sarah and her son Benjamin totally disappear.

The 73rd Regiment of Foot, the Royal Highlanders

In 1809, Colonel Lachlan Macquarie arrived as Governor, and the New South Wales Corps was replaced by his own regiment - the 73rd. The 1st Battalion of the 73rd Regiment landed in Sydney on 1 January 1810 and took over duties from the New South Wales Corps (102nd Regiment). It was thus the first of many British line regiments that garrisoned New South Wales for the next sixty years.

When the 1st Battalion serving in New South Wales completed its tour of duty in 1814 it was ordered to Ceylon, where it remained until 1821. Ambrose would have thus left the Regiment on or before 1814.

Ambrose Thomas Burnside is Beverley Melchior's 4th Great Grand Father
