Amnon Shashua (אמנון שעשוע; born May 26, 1960) is an Israeli computer scientist and businessman. He is a computer science professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem as well as Senior Vice President at Intel Corporation and President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mobileye,[1] and co-founder of OrCam.

Contents Biography Amnon Shashua received his B.Sc in mathematics and computer science from Tel-Aviv University in 1985 and his M.Sc in computer science in 1989 from the Weizmann Institute of Science[2] under the supervision of Shimon Ullman. His Ph.D in brain and cognitive sciences was received from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), while working at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, in 1993; and his postdoctoral training under Tomaso Poggio at the center for biological and computational learning at MIT.

Academic career Shashua has been on the computer science faculty at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem since 1996. In 1999 he was appointed as an associate professor and in 2003 received full professorship. From 2002 to 2005 he was the head of the engineering and computer science school at the Hebrew University.[3] Shashua currently has held the Sachs chair in computer science at the Hebrew University since 2007.[4] Over the years, he has published over 100 papers in the field of machine learning and computational vision.[5][6]

Shashua's work includes early visual processing of saliency and grouping mechanisms, visual recognition and learning, image synthesis for animation and graphics, theory of computer vision in the areas of multiple-view geometry and multi-view tensors, multilinear algebraic systems in vision and learning, primal/dual optimization for approximate inference in MRF and Graphical models, and (since 2014) deep layered networks.

Awards and recognition Shashua’s work with Lior Wolfe on multiple-view geometry was one of three joint "best papers" at the 2000 European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) and received the Marr Prize "honorable mention" at the 2001 International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV).[7] His work with Tamir Hazan on graphical models was the "best paper" runner-up at the 2008 Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI).[8][9] Shashua received first prize in the 2004 Kaye Innovation award,[10] and the 2005 Mifal HaPayis Landau Prize for Science and Research in the area of Exact Sciences - Robotics.[11]

On Israeli Independence Day 2017, Shashua was chosen for one of the highest honors in Israeli society, to light a torch at the national ceremony on Mt. Herzl.[12] The committee that selects the torch-lighters decided to honor him for his contribution to the development of cutting edge technology that assists in the reduction of road accidents and assistance to the visually impaired.

In 2019 Shashua was recognized by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology as the Electronic Imaging (EI) Scientist of the Year, an annual award honoring a member of the electronic imaging community who demonstrates excellence and commands the respect of his/her peers by making significant and substantial contributions to the field of electronic imaging.[13] He was recognized for his contributions to computer vision and machine learning, and for advancing autonomous driving and wearable assistive devices for the blind and visually-impaired. Shashua and his team were also finalists in the European Inventor Awards of 2019, awarded by the European Patent Office, for their advanced driver assistance technology which is making roads safer worldwide.[14] In 2020 he was awarded the Dan David Prize for his work in Artificial Intelligence.[15]

Business career In 1995 Shashua founded CogniTens, which was sold to Hexagon AB in 2007.[16] In 1999, Shashua co-founded Mobileye and currently serves as Senior Vice President at Intel Corporation and President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mobileye, an Intel company. Mobileye is a company that develops systems-on-chip and computer vision algorithms for detecting pedestrians, vehicles, traffic signs, lanes and more for driving assistance systems. Mobileye is also developing autonomous driving technology.[17] On August 1, 2014 Mobileye launched its IPO on the NYSE which was the biggest Israeli IPO ever in the US raising approximately $1 billion at a market cap of $5.3 billion.[18]

In 2010, Shashua co-founded OrCam, an Israeli company which launched an assistive device for the visually impaired based on computer vision capabilities.[19]

On March 13, 2017 Mobileye and Intel announced the intent for Intel to acquire Mobileye for $15.3 billion.[20] The deal, which was closed on August 8, 2017, was the largest acquisition of an Israeli tech company to date.[21]

אמנון שעשוע (נולד ב-26 במאי 1960) הוא סגן נשיא בכיר בחברת אינטל, מנכ"ל ומנהל הטכנולוגיה הראשי של חברת "מובילאיי", אותה הוא ייסד (במשותף עם זיו אבירם), מייסד-שותף בחברת "אורקם טכנולוגיות" ופרופסור למדעי המחשב באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים.

ביוגרפיה

למד במגמת מחשבים באורט טכניקום בגבעתיים. בשנת 1985 קיבל תואר ראשון במתמטיקה ומדעי המחשב מאוניברסיטת תל אביב. בשנת 1989 קיבל תואר שני במתמטיקה ומדעי המחשב ממכון ויצמן למדע, בהנחייתו של פרופ' שמעון אולמן. בשנת 1993 קיבל תואר דוקטור מ-MIT, על מחקר שעשה במסגרת המעבדה לאינטליגנציה מלאכותית. את הפוסט דוקטורט עשה ב-MIT,
במרכז ללמידה ביולוגית וחישובית. לאורך השנים פרסם מעל ל-100 מאמרים שונים בתחומים של ראייה ממוחשבת ולמידה חישובית.

בשנים 1995–1996 היה מרצה בכיר במחלקה למדעי המחשב של הטכניון בחיפה. בשנת 1996 עבר לבית הספר למדעי המחשב ולהנדסה של האוניברסיטה העברית. בשנת 1999 מונה לפרופסור חבר ובשנת 2003 מונה לפרופסור מן המניין. בשנים 2002–2005 עמד בראש בית הספר למדעי המחשב ולהנדסה של האוניברסיטה העברית.

חבר בחבר הנאמנים של עזריאלי - מכללה אקדמית להנדסה ירושלים.

בשנת 1995 הקים את חברת קוגניטנס (CogniTens), שעסקה בהדמיה תלת-ממדית לבקרת איכות בפסי ייצור, באמצעות חיישנים אופטיים ומצלמות. בשנת 2007 נמכרה החברה לחברת הקסגון השוודית, בלי שכיסתה את ההשקעה בה.

בשנת 1999 הקים את חברת "מובילאיי" העוסקת בפיתוח, ייצור ושיווק מערכות סיוע מתקדמות לנהג (ADAS (אנ')), המבוססות על טכנולוגיות לעיבוד תמונה, והוא משמש יו"ר ומדען ראשי שלה.

באוגוסט 2014 הונפקה מובילאיי בבורסת ניו יורק בשווי של 5.8 מיליארד דולר והיא נחשבת להנפקה הישראלית הגדולה ביותר בכל הזמנים. בשנת 2017 נמכרה מובילאיי לחברת אינטל בסכום של 15.3 מיליארד דולר, בעסקה הגדולה ביותר בתולדות המשק הישראלי.

באוגוסט 2010 יצא לחופשה ללא תשלום בת שנתיים מהאוניברסיטה העברית, לשם הקמתה של חברת "אורקם טכנולוגיות", המפתחת משקפיים לסיוע ללקויי ראייה, באמצעות טכנולוגיה של עיבוד תמונה והקראה ממוחשבת.

בשנת 2015 דורג על ידי המגזין "פורבס ישראל" בין 100 עשירי ישראל עם הון מוערך של 4.3 מיליארד ש"ח.

ב-2018 החל לפעול למען שילובם של גברים ונשים מהמגזר החרדי בשוק העבודה. ואף פתח בשיתוף עמותת קמא טק את חלל העבודה המשותף הראשון בבני ברק.

בשנת 2019 הצטרף למיזם של מריוס נכט להקמת בנק דיגיטלי חדש בישראל. בספטמבר 2019 אישר בנק ישראל את הקמת הבנק.

שעשוע הוא יו"ר ומייסד משותף (יחד עם פרופ' יואב שוהם ואורי גושן) של חברת ההזנק AI21 Labs, העוסקת ביישומי בינה מלאכותית.
