m. (1) March 17, 1756, Abigail, dau. of Benj. and Abigail Sheldon. She d. Oct. 17, 1758.

His father, Ensign Joseph Root, made a codicil to his will, leaving ,£200 more to his son Amos, "provided he does not learn a trade." Probably he wished him to remain on a farm.* He rem. with his brother Eli to Pittsfield, Mass., where he remained as late as 1 771, and from thence he rem. to a place then called Benson (now Pittsford), Vt.
