Deacon Joseph Root, son of Joseph (2824), grandson of Thomas (2803), b. Aug. 23, 1715, at Westfield, Mass., where he lived. He m. Sept. 8, 1743, Ann Bancroft.* He d. June 7, 1789, ae. 73. She d. May 11, 1799, ae. 79.

In the Westfield graveyard his tombstone bears the following inscription:

In Memory of
Dean Joseph Root,
who died 7th June, 1789,
in the 74th year of his age.

Now after death my very dust will bid
you come and share the love my
soul did taste in the house of prayer.
