Anders married Kristine Kjornli Olesdatter who was born on the Lalum Farm Stange, Hedmark fylke, Norway. Anders and Kristine left Stange Norway on April 24, 1882. At this time they had 2 children: Oline Larsen b. 1879 and died 1882. and Ludvig Anderson Vastad born 1881 and died 1883. What happened was Oline had to be hospitalized in Castle Garden Hospital in NY. She suffered from pneumonia for three days. Her death certificate indicates she was buried on Hart Island. However records of that time, do not indicate she was buried there. The other option is that the family had her privately buried.

Second child, Ludvig Anderson Vastad was born on the Godager Farm, Stang, Norway. After surviving the journey aboard ship SS Scythia, the family moved to Rothsey, MN to pay for the ship's fare, as a cousin (Jacob?) had loaned them money. Ludvig died of diphtheria in an epidemic that swept the area in Minnesota. The grave is just east and across the road from the country church that his parents attended. The burial site in 1977 was then a field of maturing wheat . There was no marker, or anything to indicate a mass grave site. Ludvig's death is recorded in the South Immanuel Luteran church, Rothsey, Ottertail County, Minnesota parish records for 1870-1911.
