_______________________________________________

How Joseph Frye became André Franche dit Laframboise

Joseph Frye was born in about 1680 in Kittery (now Eliot, Maine) from Adrian and Sarah White (daughter of John and Lucy, from Kittery). He has 6 siblings : Eleanor, William, Sarah, Elisabeth, Adrian and Joanna.

Friendship between English and Native American was strained, especially with Algonquian tribe. They made raids during the First Intercontinental War (or King William’s War) : killed and captured many settlers on their paths. In 1695, Joseph was taken captive by them. He was only 15.

During his captivity, he was an indentured servant* and was released between 1700 and 1706. Joseph decided to stay in New-France by volition. He converts himself to catholicism (he was quaker) and got naturalized as André Franche dit Laframboise by royal letter. He probably choose that name in honor to his father, Adrian.

He committed himself to marry Thérèse Varin in 1707. However, this contract was cancelled a short while later.

He finally married Marie-Louise Bigras on October 16, 1718 at Pointe-Claire, Montréal (Parish of Saint-Joachim). They had 12 children.

Although he was an habitant, he was also a Voyageur. He signed many contracts between 1738 to his death.

He died on April 11, 1750 at Pointe-Claire.

  • Indentured servant was a labor system whereby young people paid for their passage to the New World by working for an employer for a certain number of years. The indenture document specified how many years the servant would be required to work, after which they would be free. – Wikipedia.

From Wikipedia ("surname"):

In French Canada, up until the 19th century, several families adopted surnames which followed the family name in order to distinguish the various branches of a large family. These surnames were preceded by the word "dit", meaning 'said', and were known as "nom-dit", meaning 'said-name'. This tradition is not in use anymore, but in many cases, the nom-dit has come to replace the original family name. Thus, the Bourbeau family has split into Bourbeau dit Verville, Bourbeau dit Lacourse and Bourbeau dit Beauchesne. In many cases, Verville, Lacourse or Beauchesne has become the new family name. Likewise, the Rivard family has split into the Rivard dit Lavigne, Rivard dit Loranger and Rivard dit Lanoie. The origin of the nom-dit can vary. Often it denoted a geographical trait of the area where that branch of the family lived: Verville lived towards the city, Beauchesne lived near an oaktree, Larivière near a river, etc. Some of the oldest nom-dits are derived from the war name of a settler who served in the army or milicia: Tranchemontagne (mountain slasher), Jolicoeur (braveheart). Other may denote a personal trait: Lacourse might have been a fast runner, Legrand was probably tall, etc.
