Well-grown seedlings recall the carillon that was installed in Sør-Fron church in the spring of 1956. The notes from the carillon had a magical sound, and when the wind blew from the right direction they could be heard from a long distance and tied the village together like the weather and the wind. The sound was created by tiny hammers hitting a bronze piece (bell metal) of sizes that were calibrated so that it produced pure but weak bell tones. This happened in a large cabinet in the sacristy. These weak tones were amplified and broadcast from loudspeakers in the tower. The melodies were programmed on rollers that went around and had small holes so that each hole triggered a hammer blow. It was called an electromechanical carillon. It came from Schulmeric Carillons Ltd in Pennsylvania in the USA, sent as a gift from the Norwegian-American Andrew (Andreas) Melgard (18701964) and his wife Minnie Othelia Carper (18751957). The carillon was controlled by a clockwork so that it was played at fixed times. It could be hymns, such as The Great White Flock (Norsk hymn book no. 267), Christmas songs (such as Chimer i klokker, no. 49) or it could be a classical piece such as Panis angelicus by César Franck. When the power went out, the chimes stopped, and mother Liv Hov (1922-2021) had to go down to the sacristy to set the clockwork so that the chimes did not start in the middle of the night and disturb those who lived nearby. In the toreverse season, it was perhaps turned off when mother and father went on holiday. There were not many such carillons in Europe, and it was difficult to find knowledgeable service people. This was in the infancy of electronics. Gradually, the carillon stood for longer periods awaiting service. Tones could disappear so that the piece of music was unrecognizable. And in the 1970s it was over. In the Kyrkjeblad for Sør-Fron in the June issue of 1956, a note says "The inscription that Andrew and Lloyd George Melgard had set up in the church has the following wording: The electronic chime this church is dedicated to the glory of God and is donated in memory of Lars (1831-1911) and Anne Melgard (1835-1911). It is the donor's hope that the tones of these bells will give all who hear them an increased impression of beauty and remind them of the sons and daughters who left their beloved homeland to seek their happiness and found new homes in the "new world". Donated by Andrew and Minnie Melgard, Warren, Minnesota, USA. AD 1956." Øystein Hov
