About Andrew Alexander Bowe

Picture from the White Tower burger bar, of Andrew Bowe, owner, SF CA.

Married 2/14/1950 Los Angeles CA.

From the obit for Andrew A. Bowe:

Andrew A. Bowe, 70 a resident of Anacortes, died Friday, May 19, 1978 in Anacortes. He had lived in the Anacortes area for the past three years, selling their family home in Venice Beach, CA and purchasing one of the mobile homes that once existed in a beautiful park above the ferry terminal where the ferry leaves for the San Juan Islands and Canada, Clara's family home. He was born in Chippewa Falls, WI, July 8, 1907. Before his retirement in 1972, he was an aircraft assembler with the McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company in CA, and a lifetime union member. He is survived by his wife, Clara Olive (Senff) Bowe, at the family home; one daughter, Andrea Bowe, CA, one grandson, Joshua M. Andrew Bowe (baptized 2/14/1978 at St. Michael's Church, Boulder Ck. CA by Father Kelly, with a godmother from Hawaii and godfather, Stephen Michael Vernarelli), three sisters, Edna Bresina, Sister Jane Frances, and Erma Jenneman, all of WI, and 6 brothers, Matthew, Leo, Leonard, Erwin, Raymond and Ernest, all of Chippewa Falls WI, dairy farmers.

From his daughter's research:

He had a license for a restaurant in LA in 1931 @ 455 S. Figueroa St. #38149, and also had accomplished his dream of leaving the family farms because of his asthma at 15 and coming out west, starting his own hamburger stand called White Tower in the Marigold Ballroom at the corner of Grant and Nicollett (Nicolette?) Ave. Mlls. in San Francisco, CA. A hamburger was a nickel and a ham and egg sandwich a dime! Under Alexander A. Bowe, (first and middle names reversed), he also worked for Lockheed in Burbank CA in 1945, Clock No. 107398, ID 166032. His daughter Andi Bowe still has his original Lockheed I.D. with fingerprint on back and the following : Date Issued 1-11-45, age 37, height 5-11 wt. 172, hair brown, eyes brown. (They were actually hazel, as are his grandson's Joshua M. Bowe.) Andrew had many hobbies, such as carpentry, recording songs and thoughts, and volunteering to drive the Senior Van in the RSVP program after he retired with wife Clara to her hometown of Anacortes WA, selling their home in Venice Beach CA to a cousin of Andi's from WI, who was an accomplished stained glass artist whose work included a large section behind and above a bar/bistro in POP, CA, of cartoon characters from Walter Lantz and Walt Disney. Andrew had volunteer hours totaling almost 400 hours of service, despite his poor health and asthma before he passed on. His wife Clara survived him until she was almost 103 years old. She had almost 200 hours of community service with the Senior Center (then in the downstairs of City Hall, where she purchased a house across the street on 5th and built by her cousins in 1925, so she could be near her center of volunteerism.
With Sally Hill, who still directs the Anacortes Senior Center in this year, 2017,) in 1982 alone, and then she delivered Meals on Wheels for another 15 years, as well as starting many of the programs at the Anacortes Senior Center that gained them National Recognition just a year before she passed on in 2014. This included a Senior Band, a Senior Exercise program, and a Senior Plant Sale, among others. Andi's little red radio wagon from her childhood and her old Schwinn one speed bike became Clara's and she used them for many years.

Andrew and Clara both loved to dance to country music and spent many happy hours while their daughter was growing up at Knott's Berry Farm and at the ballroom on the Venice Beach Boardwalk that belonged to Lawrence Welk where they built POP (Pacific Ocean Park), a huge amusement pier in the late 50s and early 60s.

Andrew was the oldest child of John Nicklaus Bowe, a Wisconsin dairy farmer, and Mary "Lena" Magdalena (Bohl) Bowe. Andrew was born @ 8:30 AM on July 8, 1907, in the Township of Tilden in Chippewa Co. WI, also the birthplace of his parents, although they spoke and wrote both German and English. His mother's address at the time was Rt. 2, Chippewa Falls, WI. He had ten brothers and sisters, including 2 sets of fraternal twins who married the twins from the farm next door.
