40. ANDREW GREELE3 (Benjamin 2, Andrew 1), b. at Haverhill, Mass., March 17, 1683-3; m. Salisbury, Mass. (published Dec. 19, 1703), Eleanor Hook, b. at Salisbury, Mass., Feb. 20, 1673, dau. of William and Elizabeth Hook. She d. Salisbury, Mass., Nov. 23, 1727. He m. 2d, at Salisbury, Mass., Jan. 23, 1743, Hannah Winsley, b. at Salisbury, Mass., March 23, 1688-9, dau. of Ephraim and Mary (Greele) Winsley (No. 29). He d. Salisbury, Mass., Nov. 9, 1747.

He was one of the five contributors who built the first schoolhouse within the jurisdiction of what is now Seabrook, in 1717, and purchased about 1720 "The Merchant's Magazine or Tradesman's Treasure," by Edward Hatton, for the use of the school to be kept therein. This book was in a good state of preservation and in possession of Oliver Eaton, Esq., in 1888.

Mr. Eaton writes : " I can remember the old Greeley mansion, vacated by Andrew in 1747, with its nice wainscotted front rooms and stairway, its wide paneled doors and wooden latches.”

Will

His will is recorded in Essex County Probate, Vol. XXVII, page 235 :—

In the name of God, Amen. I, Andrew Greele of Salsbury, in the County of Essex in the Province of the Mass Bay in New England, yeo- man, being weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the manner following, viz. First of all, I commend my soul to God in Christ my blessed Savior, and my body to the dvist to be decently buried in hopes of a blessed resurrection to life eternal, and as to my temporal estate, I do give de- mise and dispose of the same in manner following, viz : First my will is that all my debts and funeral expenses be duly paid by my executors and second, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Edith, the wife of Francis Hook, all my real estate in housing, lands, meadows and salt marsh of all sorts and kinds whatsoever or wheresoever the same lyes or may be found. To have and to hold to her the said Edith her heirs and assigns forever, half thereof immediately after my decease and the other half thereof after my wife Hannahs decease, and not before.

Third, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Hannah Greele, the sole use, possession and improvement of the Easterly end of my dwelling house and the cellar belonging to it, and also my barn and barn yard and the yard and convenient passages about my houses ; as also Yz of all of lands and meadow and salt marsh of all sorts and kinds, during her natural life, for her comfortable support and maintenance ; furthermore, I give to my said wife all my stock of Neat Cattle and Sheep, horses and swine and all movables, debts due to me of all sorts and kinds and all the estate she brought with her at marriage, to be at her dispose as she shall see good ; and also the use of all my own proper household stuff as long as she lives and what may remain of my said household stuff at her death, my will is that it shall return to my daughter Edith or her daughters; and finally, I do constitute and appoint my wife Hannah Greele ye sole executor of this my last will and testament Witness my hand and seal July 22, 1747.

Administration on his estate was granted his widow, Hannah, but by reason of bodily infirmity and age, she refused the trust, and asked that Francis Hook, husband of Edith Greele, be ap- pointed, which request was granted May 2, 1748.

Notes

William2 Hooke perhaps had a first wife in England. He married Elizabeth Dyer there and was the father of seven children, the oldest probably born in England, the rest at Salisbury, Massachusetts. They were:
