About Andrew Simpson

GEDCOM Note

Andrew Simpson, b. about 1697 in Scotland [Andrew Simpson's place of birth is uncertain, see below -ed.], married Elizabeth Patton. They emigrated to Boston in 1725. He was a linen weaver and wove in Boston a few years. Subsequently he removed to Nottingham, New Hampshire, where he bought a farm, this farm is still owned by their descendants, the house stands south of Col. Joseph Ciley's (sic) residence. Mrs. Elizabeth (Patton) Simpson was murdered by Indians in September 1742 [sic], an alarm had been given of the presence of hostile Indians, and the women and children had been gathered into the "Block House", which stood on the great square west of the James H. Butler residence, but Mrs. Simpson went to her house to attend to some domestic duty and there met her terrible fate. (White, Emma Siggins, The Kinnears and Their Kin, Tierman Data Print, Kansas City, MO, 1916, p. 407; Call #: CS 43.G46X G4348, US/CAN Film Area 1036449, Item 1})

The Simpson Family The Simpson forefathers came to America around 1635 from Northern Ireland in the "True Love." [name of ship? -ed.] Some settled in New Salem and Watertown Mass. Others including Andrew Simpson's ancestor settled in Londonderry, N. H. The Simpson clans were founders of linen factories in Belfast and Edinburgh. Andrew emigrated to Boston in 1725 with his wife, brother-in-law, Robert Patten and forty weavers. They were active at the weaving trade in Boston, as well as members of the First Presbyterian Church of Long Lane, Boston, where baptismal records of their children remain. Andrew did not find Boston conducive to the raising of a family of boys, and soon after he and Robert Patten purchased a ten acre home lot jointly on Fish Street (now Raymond Rd. (Rte. 156)), Nottingham, in 1728. In 1729, Andrew purchased property in Londonderry, near the Canada [or Candia -ed.] Ranges or Ministerials, where the family stopped briefly. The land was sold in 1735. Their first home in Nottingham was a log house and the homestead home in Notti[ngham] was expanded with further purchases of land in the ensuing years. Robert Patten later moved to Chester, N. H. A tragedy of the Simpson's in America was the killing of Andrew's wife, Elizabeth Patten (sic) Simpson, at her log cabin in Nottingham in 1747 by two Winepissogee Indians; the same day that Beard and Folsom were massacred. The massacre brought solemn alarm to the province of N. H. Andrew later married Abigail York Brown, and they had two children, William and Abigail. William was a sheriff in Deerfield and willed "a half a kettle." The daughter, Abigail, married a Quaker and potter by trade. Andrew has six sons and one daughter who grew to maturity in Nottingham. Thomas and Andrew were surveyors and agents who set the lines between Nottingham and Deerfield, after that town was set off. Thomas then became a resident of Deerfield and was the first parish clerk. Robert and Josiah, other sons, fought in the French and Indian Wars near Lake Champlain, and Maj. Patten Simpson and his brother Andrew were both Revolutionary War patriots. Maj. Simpson settled in Deerfield, where today still stands the old Simpson homes, while Andrew remained in Nottingham at the old homestead. These patriots of Nottingham and Deerfield were God-fearing and dedicated to the cause of Freedom. The Revolutionary War records of Andrew's sons and grandsons, seven in all, are impressive handwritten experiences and a part of Americana. They are in the possession of descendants and in the Washington, D. C. National Archives. The grandsons of Andrew, sons of Thomas, Esq., were Maj. John Simpson of Bunker Hill fame; Thomas II, who served at Valley Forge and the Battle of Ticonderoga and Saratoga; Robert, mustered into the Army at 13, served at Valley Forge and Saratoga. Other grandsons of Andrew II, of the Revolutionary War were William, who served under Col. Cilley; Josiah, who volunteered for service at the age of 15, his father had him discharged, but Josiah ran away from home. Josiah received a bounty of $700 which he gave to his father for a release from his control. His father accepted the money, but never forgave him and left Josiah no provision in his will. Josiah's brothers, Robert and Joseph, married two grand daughters of Jonathan Longfellow, ancestors of Henry W. Longfellow, the poet. Another brother, Andrew, became a sea captain in Durham and built ships of white oak for Portsmouth seafarers. His son was also a sea captain who later doubled the Horn 26 times. He and his wife became wealthy, endowing the Congregational Church and Library in Durham with a gift of $18,000. Yet another brother, John, settled on the old homestead and had ten children by his wife, Abigail Gile. John G., his son, stayed on the homestead; all had a good education for the time; many ventured to various other area to seek their fortune. Andrew's grandsons were numerous and ambitious, and all made a mark in the world of industry, education and farming. George Semmes Simpson, a western pioneer who married a Spanish beauty, Juana Suaso, brings romance to the family through the birth of their daughter, Isabella, the first white child born in the Rocky Mtn. Region of Colorado. The Indians gave a war dance in honor of this child and brought her many gifts. George Simpson's tomb is cut into the rock of Simpson's Nest, Colo. [George Seemed Simpson does not appear to be from the same family line -ed.] From the personal diaries of Comfort Stevens Simpson, wife of John G., life in this rural town of Nottingham is depicted; the social visits of relatives, the gathering of milk weed "down" for pillows, the preserving of wild strawberries, the white washing of the dairy cellar -- life was full. The writer's grandmother, Mary Simpson, daughter of John and Comfort, was married to Warren Glidden, a Civil War veteran of Pembroke. She was a school teacher in Nottingham prior to her marriage, and an avid reader, having a fine memory. Ownership of the Simpson homestead changed to "Glidden" with this marriage. Grandfather was a man of small stature, doing the heavy farm work. He believed a cow had to be a Jersey to be a good one and he had several, selling the calves for veal. He owned a grey horse and buggy which he used often to go to the store and Lee Depot to meet the train, on which relatives were always arriving to stay for weeks at a time during the summer. It was an enjoyable time playing croquet on the lawn, singing around the piano and peeling apples. Taxes were burden, as money was scarce. They had four children of whom one was my father, Frederick. He met my mother, Etta Brown, school teacher in Deerfield for many years, while working at her father's mill in Deerfield. They were married in 1913, moved to the old farm in Nottingham and had twin daughters, Dorothy and Mary. Dorothy lived to infancy. My mother was one of eleven children and missed the social life of Deerfield, so my father took her to visit her family every possible Sunday. My father was a hard-working farmer most of his life, hoeing by hand the large gardens on both sides of the road, as long as he was able. Particular pride was taken in the cinnamon grapes, which were of the original vines on the homestead; a few remain. Cranberrying was a "must" in the Fall; Dad and some of the neighbors would strike down across the back field, on the way to the Pawtuckaway bogs. A sociable glass of cider was enjoyed by all men visitors in the cellar. In the house, my mother was active with cleaning, preserving, cooking, sewing and making quilts. Family life was quiet and satisfying; callers were always welcome to share a meal. Tramps used to walk the roads when I was young and many times a pitiful soul was given a hot meal and sent on his way. With the demise of my parents at ages 84 and 93 respectively, the direct line ownership of the Simpson homestead has come to me, Mary Glidden Smith. My husband, Eben Smith, WWII veteran, maintains the farm in addition to his outside job. Although the livestock and pastures are gone, the fields are still open and the home remains much the same. Next in line is Nancy Willey, married to Francis Willey, of Auburn, N. H. where the couple reside with their four children.
