Andries "Dries" Niewoudt (1945 - 2020)
Brief overview:
Andries (75), an elderly farmer from Farm Rust de Winter, Hammanskraal, and his wife Mariana were attacked and severely assaulted on Monday 21st December 2020. The four perpetrators first overpowered Mariana, whom they tied up and locked in the bathroom. Andries tried to fight off his attackers, who severely beat him and tied him up and left him on the kitchen floor.
For more than 48 hours Andries lay on the floor and his wife tied up in the locked bathroom, until she managed to untie herself and break open the door. Andries died from his injuries in hospital on 24th December 2020. At the time of going to press, Andries' wife was still in hospital.
"Casper Liversage of the Hammanskraal Community Policing Forum (CPF) told the media that the attack on the couple in which the man was severely assaulted happened on Monday 21 December, 2020 at around 13:00 when they were overpowered in their home. The man was seriously assaulted and tied up."
The perpetrators stole the couples vehicle and firearms.
Capt. Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele confirmed the incident and said four suspects were being sought.
Update 21st February 2021: Lawrence Makhubela and Jacob Maponyane were arrested on January 28th 2021. They dropped their bail application in court in Cullinan on Monday 21st February 2021. The two are facing charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. A third suspect is believed to appear in court on Monday, while the case against Makhubela and Maponyane has been postponed until next month March 2021.

- Lawrence Makhubela and Jacob Maponyane appeared in court on 22/02/2021, and are facing charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. A third suspect is believed to appear in court on Monday, while the case against Makhubela and Maponyane has been postponed until next month (March 2021).
- Update April 2023: Lawrence Makhubela, Jacob Maponyane and Cornelius Makatu were found guilty of murdering Dries in the Pretoria High Court. They will not be sentenced until later this year.
- Judge Papi Masopa on 14 July 2023, imposed heavy sentences on the three murderers. Lawrence Refemate Makhubela (52), Cornelius Makatu (38) and Jacob Maponyane Seokola (48) were earlier found guilty on charges of premeditated murder of 75-year-old Dries Nieuwoudt and attempted murder of his 71-year-old wife, Mariaan. They were also found guilty on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances. Makhubela was also found guilty on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, seven years for attempted murder, 15 years for robbery, five years for possession of an illegal firearm and five years for illegal possession of ammunition. Makatu and Seokola were both sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, seven years for attempted murder and 15 years for robbery.
