Andries Visser (1926 - 2008)

Brief overview:

Andries (82), was shot six times, in the stomach, chest and under the chin, while trying to protect his wife, Deborah (70), during an armed attack at the couples home in Lombard Street, Wonderboom South, Pretoria, on the night of 15th July 2008.

Five armed men attacked Deborah in the kitchen, kicking and beating her. Andries heard his wife screaming, and ran from the bedroom and tried to ward off the attackers with an axe.

The neighbours heard Deborah's cries for help, and when they went to investigate, they saw the robbers jumping over the gate and fleeing up the hill through a hole in the fence across the road.

The couple's son received a phone call from his mother to say that his father had been shot and killed. He, and his family, had gone to visit his parents and left at around 19h00. "I don't know where my father got the axe, but he tried to fight back and hit one of the robbers. In the fight, the robbers shot him six times."

The police arrived and combed the mountain by the reservoir with the help of helicopters, but the perpetrators got away.

Deborah was taken to hospital and treated for her injuries and trauma.

The only items stolen were Andries's mobile phone and Deborah's handbag with less than R200 in it.

Police spokesperson, Mirna von Benecke, said the police are investigating a case of murder and house robbery.
