Andrietta "Mona" Sawyer (1924 - 2002)

Mona (78), was attacked on 29th April 2002, she was approached by an unknown number of suspects who came to the kitchen door. They had apparently asked for bread, because a loaf was found next to the body, she was stabbed several times in the neck.

• *"We have just become another statistic. Like everyone else, we can now say that the police and our legal system doesn't actually help anyone," daughter Andree Moore said, visibly numb and in shock. When asked to describe her mother, she said: "I am probably the most biased person in the world, but in my opinion she was the most wonderful woman. She never interfered and always helped. I am devastated by her death." Well loved by the Magaliesburg community, Sawyer was a mother of four who had 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "We have lived here for five years and been very happy. In fact, the other day, my brother called from Zimbabwe to say he had been shocked by the number of farm murders here and told us we'd actually be safer in Zimbabwe," said Moore. As Sawyer's body was removed, her faithful dog was pining for its owner. "It's hard to think that she actually opened the door to people she might have known, and wanted to give them bread. Then they left without touching anything or taking a cent out of her purse," Moore said. She added that Sawyer had generally carried a firearm, but had taken to leaving the gun locked in the safe out of concern for her granddaughter's safety.
