About Ann Adamson

ID: I054 Name: Ann SKUTE Sex: F Birth: WFT Est 1678-1704 Death: BEF 25 Jul 1733 in Sprinfield, Bucks Co, PA 2 Christening: Quaker 3 Note: [Br?derbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #0863, Date of Import: Apr 23, 1996] Ann Skute died shortly after the birth of her son, Simon Adamson. She was the great granddaughter of Sven Skute who had been sent by the Queen of Sweden to capture a fort. Source: Roberts, Clarence Vernon, comp. Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks...[County (Quakertown)] Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: the compiler, 1925. (GEN 974.8 R643 PA) "John Adamson brought a certificate to Gwynedd Monthly Meeting 3 mo. 31, 1726, from Haddonfield, New Jersey, and probably settled about that time on a plantation of 150 acres in Springfield, along the line of Richland Manor adjoining Peter Ashton, which was patented to him by John, Thomas, and Richard Penn 10 mo. 5, 1739. He was accompanied by his wife Ann and four children; two or three more children were born to them in Springfield. At Gwynedd Monthly Meeting 7 mo. 25, 1733: The Swamp Friends reported 'ye John Adamson's wife is dead leaving a young child to nurse,* being unable to help it for want of assistance.' A subscription was made and forty shillings contributed for their relief. (The Gwynedd Meeting reported Ann Adamson, dead 7 mo, 25th day, 1733, leaving a nursing infant (Simon). [The date said to have been converted to the Gregorian (todays) calendar - I have not seen this record, but the 7th month in 1733 would have been the month of September.] Others report her death as 6 Oct 1733, which is the conversion. After her death, the Swamp Friends of the Gwyned MM donated 40sh to provide a wet nurse for Simon....by Kay Haden)'
Little is known of John after that date. On 1 mo. 1, 1753, he conveyed his plantation to his son Thomas, and he probably died soon after that date.

  • This child was probably Simon Adamson, who was married out of unity in 1758." Gwynedd Monthly Meeting(Philadelphia ) -- P.O. Located on land granted to Swedish settler Sven Skute by Queen Christina in the 1650s, the museum focuses on the contributions of Swedes in Europe and America since the 17th century. Of local interest are the exhibits and video on New Sweden, the first European settlement in the Delaware Valley (1638), and its portly governor Johan Printz. Other notable individuals profiled include Swedish-American poet Carl Sandburg and the 13th-century king who would only allow the back of his head to appear in portraits. The museum, which adjoins Franklin D. Roosevelt Park, is modeled after Eriksberg Castle, a Swedish manor house. Inside, the building features an extensive library and a wood-carved map that covers an entire wall. The museum offers educational programs covering topics such as the New Sweden colony, Vikings and Swedish Christmas traditions. Located at 1900 Pattison Avenue in Philadelphia, the American Swedish Historical Museum is open Tuesday-Friday 10 am-4 pm, Saturday-Sunday 12-4 pm. Admission is $5. For information, call 389-1776.
