About John Baldwin Adamson

Arrived in America- 1691

Fraelich, p.6 ff: John Adamson was a Quaker. He and his brother, Basil, had come to America from London, England in 1691. John settled in Newton Village, New Jersey, and Basil went to Prince George County, Maryland. The marriage of John Adamson and Ann Skew is recorded in a journal that records the Procedures of Quaker Meetings as having occurred in 1716. The Newton Monthly Meeting House was built in 1684. It is believed that the settlement which historians have called "The Lost Village of Newton" was located on the north side of the middle branch of Newton Creek, Camden (formerly Gloucester) County, NJ. The Quakers had been persecuted in England; physically assaulted, publicly humiliated, their properties confiscated and shopkeepers and tradesmen refused to have business dealings with them. Newton Village was located in Camden County, across from the city of Philadelphia. William Penn had received a grant of land in America from Charles II of England on March 4, 1691. Penn intended to colonize this land with Quakers or anyone else seeking a place of religious freedom. John and Ann Skew Adamson were apparently among those Friends who had left Newton Village and moved to Haddon Township, as on 31 March 1726 they brought certificates from Haddonfield Monthly Meeting to Gwynedd Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania. They had moved to Bucks County and settled about eight miles from the present Quakertown, Pa. John Adamson settled with his family on a farm of 155 acres. Gwynedd Monthly Meeting Journals record the announcement of the death of John Adamson's wife. This announcement, made on 2 Sep 1733, included the information that their baby was in need of care. Ann may have died in childbirth. On 1 Jan 1753 John Adamson assigned his property to his son, Thomas. His death date is unknown. Simon married out of unity in 1758 to a Margaret. John and Ann were QUAKERS. Note: John Adamson was born before 1690 in Haddonfield, New Jersey [or was he born in England??]. He died after 1 Jan 1753 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. One of the first men of the name ADAMSON that we can identify as being one of our ancestors was John Adamson, a Quaker of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He was said to have been born in England and travelled to this land as a follower of William Penn. The first record of John Adamson is in the records of the Newton Monthly Meeting of Friends. Newton Meeting was located in, West Collingswood, Gloucester County, (now Camden County) New Jersey. John was a member of the Richland MM as early as 1692. JOHN ADAMSON and ANN SKUCE declared intention of marriage at the meeting in February 1715/16. The Newton Meeting became the Haddonfield Meeting in 1721, moving to a new Meeting house two or three miles away. On May 31, 1726, John, Ann and four children took a certificate from the Haddonfield Meeting to the Gwynedd Meeting at Springfield, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Ann was reported dead [ 7mo, 25, 1733] leaving a nursing infant (Simon). It is reported that after the death of his wife, Ann, the folks in this Quaker community, The Swamp Friends, of the Gwynedd Monthly Meeting donated 40 shillings to provide John's nursing infant with a wetnurse . This child was Simon Adamson. John deeded his land to son Thomas in 1753 and probably lived with his son's family for the remainder

24 MAY 1717 – Thomas Stokes Appointed to Buy a Cow to Lend to John Adamson John Adamson was among the lower class of Gloucester County. The extent of his family’s hardships is evident in the entries recorded in the documents of the Newton Monthly Meeting Minutes. When a Friend came upon hard times, he could often rely on the Quaker community to provide some financial assistance. At a monthly meeting held at Newton, the 13th day [24] of the 3rd month [May], 1717, Thomas Stokes was appointed to buy a cow to lend to John Adamson on behalf of the meeting (Haddonfield Monthly Meeting Minutes: 1710-1731, p. 42).
