XVII. George, 3rd Lord of Reay 1680-1786.

GEORGE, 3rd Lord Reay, who was born towards the close of 1678, succeeded in the title his grandfather, the second Lord Reay, towards the close of 1680, and during the following fourteen years was under the solicitous guardianship of his maternal grandfather, Sir George Munro of Culrain....

He married, secondly, Janet, daughter of John Sinclair of Ulbster, and widow of Benjamin Dunbar, younger of Hempriggs, and by her had :

  • ii. Hugh Mackay of Bighouse, Lieutenant-Colonel of the first Sutherland regiment, married (contract 15 July, 1728) Elizabeth, eldest daughter and co-heiress of George Mackay of Bighouse, and had sasine of the estate of Bighouse or Strathhalladale, 28th February, 1742. In our account of the Bighouse Mackays we give further particulars.had :
    • Hugh, an ensign in the Earl of Sutherland's regiment, died in 1751, unmarried.
    • Colin, died a child.
    • Janet, married to Colin Campbell of Glenure, murdered in 1752, with issue.
    • Mary, married to William Bailie of Rosehall, with issue ; died at Peterhead 21 September 1808.
    • Robina, died at Harrogate 10 August 1762, unmarried. He married, secondly, 14 April 1770, Isabella, daughter of Alexander Mackenzie of Lentran, and died at Bath 12 November 1770, without issue by his second marriage.
  • iii. Ann, who died 24th November, 1780, married John Watson of Muirehouse, Edinburghshire, contract dated 7th September, 1725. Their issue was two sons and a daughter : —
    • 1. Robert Watson of Muirehouse, Lieutenant-Colonel of the 25th Foot, with whom he served in Germany. He became Deputy Quarter-Master-General of the Forces in North Britain, 1758; Aide-de-Camp to the king, 176S; and died a Lieutenant-General at Aberdeen, 10th May, 1791.
    • 2. George Watson, Captain in the Royal Navy, died unmarried in 1771.
    • 3. Janet Watson, married (4th April, 1750) Alexander Bocheid of Inverleith, Edinburgh, and of Darnchester in Berwick. They had three children :—James Bocheid of Inverleith, died 1823 ; John Bocheid, an officer in the Scots Greys, died unmarried in 1779 ; and Mary Rocheid, died unmarried, 1776

  • Hugh of Bighouse, a major in the Earl of Sutherland's Regiment 1759 ; married, first (contract 15 July 1728), Margaret Mackay, coheiress of Bighouse, and by her, who died at Bighouse 26 March 1769, had :
    • Hugh, an ensign in the Earl of Sutherland's regiment, died in 1751, unmarried.
    • Colin, died a child.
    • Janet, married to Colin Campbell of Glenure, murdered in 1752, with issue.

Janet Mackay was born circa 1768.2 She was the daughter of George Mackay of Bighouse and Louisa Campbell.1,3

She married Sir Benjamin Dunbar of Hempriggs, 3rd Bt., son of Sir William Dunbar of Hempriggs, 2nd Bt. and Henrietta Rose, on 10 December 1784.1

She died on 15 March 1857 at Hempriggs Castle, Caithness, Scotland.2

From 10 December 1784, her married name became Dunbar.1
