Name and Origins

Name: Anne Fenton

Daughter of Robert Fenton and Alice Handcock.

It is sometimes said that she was Anne "Stenton." It has been shown that this is a misreading of the original parish records where a "ff" was mistaken for an "St".[1] It has been proven that she is Anne Fenton and not Anne Stenton.[2][3] The will of her mother Alice Fenton, made on the 23rd of March 1642/43 and probated in September 1644/45 names her eldest daughter, Anne, as wife of Thomas Bingham.
Birth

Born: About 1606.

The baptism record of Anne Fenton has not been found.

Her parents were married on 23 September 1605 at St. Peter's parish in Sheffield. The baptisms of four children of Robert and Alice are recorded at St. Peter's. There is a three year gap between the marriage of Robert and Alice and the christening of their oldest child. Given that Anne is named in the will of her mother as the oldest daughter, she was in all probability born in 1606. Alice could have returned to the home of her parents to have her first born child, which was a common practice. A search covering the Registers of some twenty neighboring parishes has so far failed to find the baptism entry.

Marriages and Children

Married: 1st - Thomas Bingham on 6 July 1631 in Sheffield. She was born in Sheffield, 5 February 1615, daughter of Robert and Alice (Hancock) Fenton. They had eight children. Their son, also named Thomas, known as "Thomas Bingham of Connecticut", was born 5 Jun 1642 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England who emigrated to Conneticut Colony with his mother Anne. At some point after the death of Thomas, Anne married William Backus, one of the founding fathers of Norwich, Connecticut.[4] Anne died in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, May 1670.

Married: 2nd - William Backus by 1659, probably in Saybrook, Connecticut.[2] Given that Thomas died in 1649, it seems probable that William Backus married Anne Fenton well before 1659.

They had no children.

1. Abel Bingham. Baptized on 13 May 1632.[5] Removed to Birmingham, England had a family and died.[citation needed]
2. Stephen Bingham. Baptized on 26 December 1633. [6] Married possibly married Sara Brag(g) at Worksop, Nottinghamshire, Eng.[citation needed]
3. Edward Bingham. Baptized on 28 March 1636.[7] He was buried on 16 July 1643.[8]
4. Robert Bingham. Baptized on 11 December 1638.[9] Removed to Birmingham, Eng. had a family and died.[citation needed]
5. Elizabeth Bingham. Baptized on 18 October 1640.[10] She was buried on 22 July 1641.[11]
6. Thomas Bingham. Baptized on 5 June 1642.[12] The youngest son that accompanied her when she moved to Connecticut. He died 16 January 1729/30 in Windham, Connecticut.
7. Anne Bingham. Baptized on 5 November 1644.[13] She was buried on 14 January 1646/7.[14]
8. Mary Bingham. Baptized on 5 June 1648.[15] She was baptized after her father Thomas Sr. was buried in Sheffield 12 Feb 1648/49. She was buried on 16 June 1651.[16]

Death

Died: May 1670 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut.[17]

Immigration

Anna (Fenton) Bingham was last known to be in England on 16 June 1651 when the death of her daughter Mary was recorded. There was no evidence of their location until 1659 when Thomas was assigned a house lot in Norwich, New london, CT. [18]

Soon after marriage to William Backus, Ann and her son Thomas moved to Norwich, CT. They were one of the first two founding families of this town. Thomas Bingham lived in the same house as William Backus.
