John Harlo Gibbs was born October 26, 1865 at Paris Corner, Wisconsin, the son of Harlo and Mary Bowen Gibbs. When John was two, his father died. In 1875, the family moved to Armstrong, Iowa. After finishing his education, John taught school and farmed in Iowa. In 1889, he married Ann Eliza Mitchell at Fairmont, Minnesota. Ann was born November 2, 1870, at Fullarton, Ontario. She came with her parents in 1872 to Iowa, where she finished school and taught prior to her marriage.

John and Ann had five children and then in 1902 homestead in Blaine Township, Bottineau County. where thy had four more children. John was a school board member for twenty years for the Blaine School District.

Their children: Jennie Louise (Mrs John Oscar Hagen), Whitteron Township, Bottineau County; Percey Ray (Dick), Willow City; Susie (Mrs John Johnson), Elms Township, Bottineau County; Mary (Mrs Gilbert Hagen), Ostby Township, Bottineau County; John Mitchell, Phoenix, Arizona, a farmer and World War II veteran; William Harlo, Moorhead, Minnesota; Flora Muriel (Mrs Henry Guttrud) Phoenix, Arizona; Gladys Bluebell (Mrs Julius Hegg), Julius Hegg farmed in Starbuck Township, Bottineau County and was a World War II veteran and Gladys was a teacher and also clerked in Trutna Store in Bottineau, North Dakota. ~ People of Bottineau County. 1984
