Anna Herbst (1958 – 2019)
Brief overview:
Anna (61), was murdered in her home this weekend. Herbst, or the pancake aunt as she was known throughout the town, was found in her home on Saturday morning at a small holding at Bloemspruit, on the outskirts of the city. She lived alone after her husband died earlier.
Ao. Police spokesperson Loraine Earle said emergency services workers found Herbst's body in the home after neighbours saw flames and called the fire department.
Emergency workers noticed Herbst's hands were tied when they removed the body from the home.
A murder case has been opened, but no one has been arrested in connection with the incident, Earle said. An autopsy has yet to determine the cause of Herbst's death.
At this point, only a cash drum from Herbst's vehicle, which was still standing outside the home, appears to be missing, Earle said. Her pancake money was supposedly in it.
Herbst's son-in-law, Barend Rossouw, said police had apparently also shot Herbst in the attack. He and his wife, Anneke, rushed to Herbst's home on Saturday after receiving a call about the fire there, but it was in vain. The house was destroyed by fire.
Herbst was a celebrity in the city where she recently sold pancakes for D&J Meat on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Adri Vorster, who owns D&J Vleis with her husband Jimmy, said "Aunt Anna and her pancakes" was an institution on the doorstep. “It's terribly bad for us. She was already part of the setup here. Aunt Anna was really tough, she didn't sit still,” Vorster said.
“You read some of this stuff, but it doesn't happen on your doorstep. The Tannie did not hurt a fly. The people loved her terribly, ”Vorster said.
