Will, Abstract of

"In the name of God, Amen. September 3, 1728. I, ANNE SMITH, widow of Jeremiah Smith, of Hempstead, in Queens County, being very sick. I leave to Robert Clark, 5 pounds. To Cornelius Wiltsee, a great table and two benches. To John Cornell's wife, 10 shillings. To James Smith's wife, 10 shillings. I make and ordain Mr. Santa, George Clarke, and John Smith, executors. All the rest I leave to Mary Cocks, of Monmouthshire, England." Witnesses, Micah Smith, Elly Thews, J. Purdy. Proved, February 13, 1728/9.

John "Nan" Smith (1625?-1694) married about 1646 Anna Gildersleeve. Their children were:

4. Jeremiah Smith (1656-1726) m.c1679 Hannah Carman, m(2) Hannah, m(3) Anna Cornell . ... children Jeremiah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Ruth, John, Ann, Richard, Thomas, and James Smith

Jeremiah Smith's will, 1725, names his eldest daughter Hannah, who d. leaving daughters Elizabeth and Ann, also his second daughter Elizabeth Cornell, who had daughters Elizabeth and Hannah. It does not clearly appear who these were, for it is hardly probable that the father of John Cornell's wife was living in 1725 (see Thomas,^ Thomas, Thomas,^ Richard,'^ Thomas,' also No. 28.)

John Cornell's wife Hannah could not have been identical with Hannah Smith, the daughter of Jeremiah Smith, as Rev. John Cornell's genealogy suggested. The 1698 Census of Hempstead shows John Cornell and wife Hannah, along with children John, Elizabeth, William, and Edward. Jeremiah Smith's daughters Hannah and Elizabeth were still unmarried and living with their father in 1698. Jeremiah's household on the 1698 census consisted of Jeremiah Smith, Hannah Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Jr., Hannah Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Ruth Smith, John Smith, Ann Smith, Richard Smith, and Thomas Smith. Obviously since John and Hannah Cornell were already married and with children in 1698 and Jeremiah Smith's daughter Hannah was unmarried and still living in her father's household at that time, they could not be the same woman.
