Evidence from the National Records of Scotland

27 February 1623: A charter by which Robert Steuart of Culbeg confirms that he has given the lands of Culbeg and others in the sheriffdom of Stirling to his future wife, Annabellam Erskene, for her lifetime. The charter was issued in fufillment of a marriage contract between Robert Steuart of Culbeg, who had the consent of his mother Isobelle Hammiltoun, and John, Lord Erskene and his natural daughter Annabellam Erskene. Because his mother held the lands of Nether Culbeg for her lifetime he also gave the lands of Dalbrene to his future wife in compensation. For greater security Annabellam Erskene obtained a charter of confirmation under the great seal of Scotland on 23 April 1623. Registrum Magni Sigilli Regum Scotorum. The Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, A.D. 1620-1623, charter number 452 on page 157
