It was common practice for family plots to be peppered throughout their respective homesteads, and Hannah, along with Anne Ashley (d. 1854), namesake of the Anne Ashley Church on 22nd Avenue, and Rebecca Ashley (d. 1859), join many others with death dates preceding the charter. Page 6. < newspapers.com > In 1887, a committee in the congregation decided to replace that church with a new one, which cost $4,000 and was paid off on the day the church was dedicated. Anne Ashley's son, Alexander Ashley, who lived in Washington, D.C., had set aside a sum of money, $350, to be used to rebuild the church. Feeling that Alexander Ashley was "a representative man and an enthusiastic Methodist..." the congregation decided to name the church in honor of his mother, who died in 1854 at age 60 and was buried in the church cemetery. When the cornerstone was laid, it was renamed the Anne Ashley Memorial Methodist Church. "She was an estimable and kind-hearted woman and one of the first members of Franklin. To her memory, the new church was named," according to a book called "Homestead Methodism," published in conjunction with the church's centennial in the 1930s.
