The earliest McDowell of whom there is record is John McDowell (1725-1810) who is said to have been born in Ireland. He came from Lancaster County, PA to Mifflin Township, Allegheny County, PA. His wife was Jane Barnett.
They had one child, Archibald McDowell (1750-1831. When they came west, Archibald was a small boy, and there was a registered Negro slave named "Pomp" with them. John bought 400 or more acres in Mifflin Township and farmed it, Both John and Archibald were soldiers in the American Revolution (Pennsylvania Archives,6th series, Vol., pp.34.58.61, 92-93,106.) they are buried under the McDowell monument in Lebanon Cemetery near McKeesport, PA.
Archibald loved hunting and carousing, and his parents had to take care of his wife, Jennet Macklin, and his large family of children whose names are: John, Alexander, Isabel, William, Joseph, James, Margaret, Sarah and Ann.
Archibald's War Record, Pennsylvania Archives, 6th series, Vol. 2, pp 34, 58 and 61 shows that he was listed under "2nd Class in the returns of Captain Cunningham's Company, 2nd Battalion, pfc the Washington County Militia" and that he was commended by his Captain for valiant behavior.
