About Anne Churchman

from William Witter/Hannah Churchman

Hannah Churchman was born abt 1616 to Hugh Churchman of Lynn, Massachusetts.[2]  Some documents say she was of Broomehall, Sussex, England.  Hannah probably came over to America with her father. Hugh Churchman living at Lynn, Massachusetts in its history it says that Hugh came in 1640.  But he probably came a year or two earlier since William and Hannah were married in 1639.  Hugh Churchman left all of his belongings to the children of Hannah and William in his will 1644.

From

NOTE by Chet Snow: Almost all contemporary sources agree that Mrs Ann Mary (Unknown) Churchman did not emigrate to Massachusetts with her husband, who apparently was part of the Governor Winthrop group of 700+ colonists that arrived between 1630 and 1634 on several ships. Apparently their two teen-age daughters: Hannah/Annis and Anna, did make the journey. (SIC: one daughter or two?)

The following is from contemporary 1640s sources:

In the History of Lynn, Massachusetts it says Hugh Churchman came in 1640. However in a court case in 1643 it says that he had lived without his wife for 7 or 8 years. That means he came around 1635. Of this individual little is known. He was, no doubt, the same person alluded to in the presentation to the Salem Court, 27 May 1643: “Wee present oulde Churchman for living 7 or 8 yeares without his wife; and for having the wife of Hugh Burt locked with him alone in his house. Witness, Joseph Flood, Jarrard Spenser.” And again: “Ould Churchman for living 7 or 8 yeares without his wyff, unless he bring unto Mr. Endecot, our depty Govr a certificate for Mr. Dumer, yt he haty used meanes for his wyfs comeing, and then he is discharged.”

When Hugh Churchman died in Lynn MA in 1644, no mention of his wife is made in his will.

Name seen as Anne Mary Ambrose without attribution. Death date seen as 1616 which seems a mixup for marriage date: removed.

Do not confuse with the Hannah (Churchman) Rogers family: According to the Thomas Rogers Society, Anna Churchman Rogers' parentage is unknown. See http://www.thomasrogerssociety.com/p1.htm#i26
