About Anne-Marie Barbe Huber
Louvain, Belgium
Joannes Jacob, called Jacob and also Jean-George, HUBER and Anne-Barbe SCHAUFFINE of Louvain, Belgium, came to Louisiana with a child aboard Le St.-André, which reached Ship Island in September 1721; the couple were engagés contracted to the Law Concession, to be established at Arkansas. However, with hundreds of other Germans, they were forced to wait at New Biloxi for transportation to their concession. They were sent, instead, to the Demeuves Concession, on the river above New Orleans, which soon became known as the German Coast. In September 1724, a storm surge destroyed their home in one of the German Coast villages, and they moved to Governor Bienville's plantation just below New Orleans. Son Christofe married Anne-Barbe RAUCHEN or RAUSCHE before April 1732, when their daughter Marie was born at St.-Charles des Allemands on the Lower German Coast; their son André was born not long afterwards. Anne-Barbe died in November 1746 at St.-Charles.
