About Anne-Marie Bourgeois

  • Sources:
    • 1671 Acadie Census - shown to be 10 years old which estimates his birth to be 1661.

Biography

Anne was born around 1661, in Port-Royal. In 1671, 10-year-old Anne was living with her parents and her 9 siblings at Port-Royal.

She was wed to René LeBlanc, son of Daniel LeBlanc and Françoise Gaudet, in Port Royal around 1678. The young couple was enumerated in 1678. No children or cultivable land were listed. In 1686, the young couple was living with their three young children at Rene's parent's farm. However, by 1693, they had settled in Grand-Pré des Mines (translation: Great Meadow of the Minas Basin). Did they move where there was more available land, or were they convinced to leave after the 1690 raid on Port Royal?

In 1693, 38-year-old René was living with 30-year-old Anne Bourgeois and their 7 children Jacques 15, Francoise [sic-should read Francois] 13, Rene 11, Pierre 9, Joseph and Estienne, twins, 5, and Claude 2. They had 12 cattle, 12 sheep, 12 hogs, and 16 arpents of cultivated land. The family was counted again at Grand-Pré in 1701, and at Les Mines in the censuses of 1703, 1707 and 1714.

By 1710, René and Anne had 9 children: Jacques, François, René, Pierre, twins Joseph and Étienne, Claude, Marie, Jean Baptiste, and Claire.

René passed away in 1734 at around 77 years of age. Anne died at the age of about 87 in Grand-Pré on 28 December 1747 and was interred the next day.

Use of Bourgeois Heraldic Emblems A "Bourgeois" Family Coat of Arms As of yet, no historical family coat of arms has been found for the Bourgeois family. The truth is, we doubt we will find a coat of arms that is the historically accurate coat of arms of the family and this for three reasons. •The first reason that it is inaccurate to use the term "family coat of arms". Coats of Arms were an honour bestowed to an individual and not a family. Historically, although the coat of arms was passed down through the generations, it was modified by the recipient (Cadency) in some way to become his coatof arms. In this way, two brothers would have coats of arms that would be similar but slightly different and identify them as individuals. •The second and more compelling reason is that, if existing genealogical research and theory is correct, Jacques Jacob Bourgeois' father was Nicolas Grandjehan and not a Bourgeois. If we were to find a "Bourgeois" coat of arms it would need to have come from Marie Marguerite Bourgeois' family, Jacques Jacob's mother. •And finally there is no evidence that Jacques Jacob Bourgeois ever personally received or used a coat of arms. •This having been said, the Association des Bourgeois d'Acadie, incorporated at the time and now no longer active, with the support of the Association des Bourgeois d'Amérique, now the Association of Bourgeois' of Acadian Descent(ABAD), applied for and received a grant of a coat of arms that represents Jacques Jacob Bourgeois and his descendants. •In 1998 the "Association des Bourgeois d'Amérique" considered it appropriate to join into an Association des Bourgeois d'Acadie project in order that it would become a project for the whole family. At a joint meeting, the two associations came to an agreement on that point, andmore importantly, they decided to make it so that the symbols chosen would be granted to our ancestor Jacques Bourgeois, Acadian pioneer, for himself, his family, and all of his descendants. They decided on the choice of symbols then motto and to share the cost of the project. (see the Le Bourgeois April 1998 article). •Later that year the late Honourable Romeo LeBlanc, then Governor General of Canada awarded the coat of arms and associated heraldic emblems to the Association des Bourgeois d'Acadie. This, however, must be interpreted in the light of heraldic administration rules. The armorialfor a family must be requested by an incorporated association and must be granted to it. In turn, each descendant of Jacques Bourgeois may consider himself or herself identified by these symbols as afamily member. This was clearly stated at the Association des Bourgeois d'Acadie Annual General Meeting in '97, and reconfirmed at the '98 Annual General Meeting. Moreover, it is obvious that the symbols included in the armorial are aimed at Jacques Bourgeois, his family and their descendants. (see the Le Bourgeois October 1998 article) In the light of heraldic administration rules I attach a Bourgeois and other family Crest, Coat of Arms, and Names to Acadians who derive their name from the early French language and including and not limited to the Bourgeois family name of the northwestern region known a Britanny or in French Bretagne. The name Bourgeois was given to a member of the family who was a person known as a freeman. The name Bourgeois is derived from the Old French word bourgeois, which in medieval times was used to refer to the free men of a town. Free-man were those who status was between the noble classes and the serfs who were obligated to work of the feudal estates of the lords. There were a great number of spelling variations in French surnames. One reason for this was the wide variety of cultural influences present in France during the early development of the French language. The many name variations of the name include Bourgeois, Bourgois, Bourgeoys, Bourgeot, Le Bourgeois, de Bourgeois, Bourjois, Bourgès, Bourgeix and more. My family tree consists of Jacques Jacob Bourgeois, wife Jeanne Trahan, their parents all born in France, and their ten children all born in Acadia. I honor their heritage, not as an individual given the coat of arms, but as a descendant who has been granted rights through the Canadian government by administrative rule to allow their families to associate with heraldic emblems.
