Disputed Origins

According to the Hamlin Genealogy331, pg. 54 Anne’s father was Samuel, son of Nathaniel who was born in England and married Hannah Prence, daughter of Gov. Thomas Prence. Nathaniel was the son of the Rev. John Mayo, born and university educated in England and came to New England probably in 1638; was in Barnstable in 1639.

However, the genealogy states: “It is supposed that Samuel Mayo [3rd generation], who was b. Oct. 12, 1655, was the father of Anne, who m. Benj. Hamblin [4th generation].” That supposition is a problem, since Savage139, pg. 188 says the following: “SAMUEL, Eastham, s. of the sec. John of the same, had Ann, Martha, Elizabeth and Content.” Samuel, son of John, was born in 1658, three years after his cousin above.

A transcription of the will of Samuel (b. 1655)402 lists all seven of his known children, both living and deceased. Ann or Anne is not among them, suggesting very strongly that she is not his child. Since Savage lists an Ann among the children of Samuel (b. 1658), it is concluded for now that that is the correct lineage. Thus, Anne does not descend from Ruth Hopkins and is therefore not a Mayflower descendant (unless her uncertain mother can be shown to be so).
