Biography

Ann was born about 1650, based on a marriage contract signed in 1675. Her parents were Henry Pert of Arnolds, Mountnessing, Essex and his wife Frances. Ann married Henry Meese, London Merchant who had spent time in Maryland and Virginia. The family lived in the parish of St. Katherine Cree Church. Henry died in 1682 leaving Ann with four small children, but a sizable inheritance, including land in Virginia. In 1692 Ann attempted to evict her tenant of the Virginia land for nonpayment of rent, and sell the land. Ann was still alive in 1701 when her son Henry died and named her in his will. She had died by 1719 when her daughter Ann Meese died in London but asked to be buried by her mother at Mountnessing in Essex.[1]

After Henry Meese returned to England he married a woman named Ann Pert in 1675. They had four children Ann, Francis, John and Henry Jr. Henry wrote his last will and testament in which document he describes himself as "Henry Meese of London," This document was offered for probate on April 5, 1682 at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in London and he bequeathed all his "plantations, lands, stock and appurtenances wheresoever scituate being in Virginia, Maryland or elsewhere, equally to be divided between my four children, Henry, John, Anne and Frances Meese, " and further vested his wife and executrix Anne Meese with the authority to sell and dispose of the said properties for the benefit of his four infant children. [9] His daughter Ann died unmarried in London as did his son Henry Jr.

Ann Meese (born Pert)

2nd wife of Col Henry Meese.

Notes on Col Henry Meese

1st wife Mary Ann Wahanganoche - John (1st) Ann (1st) - these children were all grown at the time of Henry's will.

2nd wife Anne Pert - the children named in Henry Meese’s will were all very young infants of his last wife, Ann Pert. Henry, John (2nd), Anne (2nd) and Francis

It was a frequent practice in those days to have more than one child by the same name due to the desires of different wives. Ann (Pert) Meese certainly wanted to name a daughter after herself, even though Henry apparently had one by that name already. T'he older John was apparently a child of Henry’s union with a daughter of Chief Wahanganoche, as was Ann, the wife of Dr. Richard Bryant.'

Since Henry’s half-Indian children were not mentioned in his will, it was probably due to each of them having reached adulthood, married, and having already been provided for by their father. It was a frequent practice for a father to refrain from naming married daughters in his will or to not mention children for whom he had already provided.”
