  • (17) Sir Richard Wentworth, Kt., of Nettlestead, Co. Suffolk, whose will was dated 15 October, and proved 21 November, 1528. By his wife, Anne, who survived him, daughter of Sir James Tirrell, of Gipping, Co. Suffolk, Kt., he had issue as follows:
    • (18) Sir Thomas Wentworth, Kt., Lord Chamberlain of the Household; who, in 1529, was summoned to Parliament, by writ, as Baron Wentworth. He died on the 3d, and was buried on the 7 March, 1550-1, in Westminster Abbey. His wife, who survived him, was Margaret, daughter of Sir Adrian Fortescue, Kt. They had issue as follows:
      • 1. Sir Thomas, 2d Baron, of whom hereafter.
      • 2. Sir Henry .... etc

  • The line was continued by
  • (19) Sir Thomas Wentworth, Kt., 2d Baron Wentworth, who is said in the Peerages to have been summoned to Parliament "from 23 January, 1552 to 4 February, 1489." This is, however, an error; as the letters of Administration granted on his estate to his son Henry, on the 18 January, 1583-4, have been found. He died at Stepney, Co. Middlesex. He was one of Queen Mary's Privy Council, and Deputy of Calais when that place was surrendered, in 1558. He was subsequently tried by his peers and honorably acquitted. He was one of the noblemen who sat in judgment on the Duke of Norfolk, and also upon Mary, Queen of Scots.
  • He was twice married. His first wife was Mary, daughter of Sir John Wentworth, Kt., of Gosfield, Co. of Essex, to whom he was married at Gosfield, 9 February, 1545-6 (For her descent, see back to No. 2, of XIV., of this note).
  • She died without issue, and he remarried Anne, daughter of Henry Wentworth, Esq., of Co. Suffolk. She was buried at Stepney, Co. Middlesex, in 1571. By her he had issue as follows:
    • 1. Thomas, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Wm. Cecil, Lord Burghley, but died without issue in his father's lifetime.
    • 2. Henry, 3d Baron, of whom hereafter.
    • 3. Elizabeth, who married William Hynde, Esq., son and heir of Sir Francis Hynde, Kt., of Madingley, Co. Cambridge.
  • The line was continues by the 2d son

  • 2. Henry Wentworth, Esq., of Codham Hall, County Essex, the first of the family who settled in that county. He died 22 March, 1482-3, having had two wives. by the 2d, Jane, daughter of Henry Fitz Lewes, who survived him, he had no issue. By his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Henry Howard( 2d son of Sir John Howard, by Mary, daughter of Sir Henry Hussey, of Co. Sussex, Kt.,) he had, with other issue, Sir Roger Wentworth, of Codham Hall, aforesaid, Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire in 1499, and died 9 August 1539, who married Anne, only daughter and heir of Humphrey Tyrrell, Esq., of Little Warley, Co. Essex. She died 28 August, 1534, leaving, with other issue, Sir John Wentworth, Kt., of Gosfield, Co. Essex, born 1494, died 15 September, 1567; he married Anne, daughter of John Bettenham, Esq., of Pluckley, Co. Kent, who was buried at Gosfield, Co. Essex, 30 November, 1595. They had two daughters. One of them, Anne, married three times: 1st. Sir Hugh Rich, 2d son of Lord Chancellor Rich, who died 1 November 1554; 2d. Henry Fitzallen, Lord Maltravers, who died in 1556; and 3d. Wm. Deane, Esq. Lady Maltravers was buried in Gosfield Church, 10 January, 1580-1. The other daughter of Sir John and Lady Anne Wentworth, viz., Mary, was married at Gosfield, 9 February, 1545-6, to Sir Thos. Wentworth, Kt., 2d Baron of Nettlestead. She died without issue, and evidently shortly after her marriage. (See forward to number 19 of this note for further account of her husband.) ________________________
