About Annie Mae Moore
In 1893, a wedding announcement in the local newspaper states that: "A nice quiet wedding was that which took place on Thursday evening, June 8th, at the residence of Mrs. Estella Smith on Montour Street, when Rev. A. E. Taylor pronounced the words which made Joseph C. Moore and Miss Annie M Smith man and wife." It goes on to say that "Miss Smith was one of our finest ladies who has lived among us all her life and in her intercourse with the people she has constantly made friends."
In a family album showing Annie playing the piano in the summer of 1949, the keeper of the album says of her: " I remember her wonderful old fashioned garden - with bleeding hearts, yellow roses, plantain lilies and honeysuckle - Her stories of teaching in a one room school house up the Loyalsock (at Woolevers) where some of the students were larger than she - She wore a size 1 shoe when she was married (a size 3 moccasin in the accompanying picture) - At age 82, she still had curly hair and could play the piano. She enjoyed mathematical puzzles and reading history and philosophy. "History of Civilization", by Will and Ariel Durant was a favorite. She kept good records of her finances, advocated thrift and homeownership and believed in dreams."
1880 Census for Montoursville, Lycoming, PA has the household of Estella E Smith, head, age 34, widowed, born in PA with daughters Jennie L Smith age 14; Anna M Smith age 12 ; and Nellie Smith age 9.
According to Aunt Helen, "once Annie's hair turned grey, she used tea leaves to color it".
