notes

Our ancestor Annis Bayford was probably born in Fornham, Essex, England. She emigrated from England to Massachusetts Bay Colony with her husband, William Chandler, 1595-1641, and children as part of the Great Migration in the 1630s. The date was probably 1634 or 1635, since son William was buried in England in 1634 and daughter Sarah was born in Massachusetts in 1635. There is some doubt about the date, because husband William's 13-year-old twin daughters from his first marriage were buried in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England, in 1636 (their mother had died 11 years before).

This was a close-knit family. The daughter of Annis and William's daughter Hannah Chandler, 1630-1711, whose name was Hannah Abbott, 1650-1741, married the son of Annis and William's son Thomas Chandler, 1628-1703, whose name was John Chandler I, 1655-1721; in other words, John and Hannah were first cousin spouses

(see http://www.milkcanpapers.com/chart/chandler0-2dl-1c.html for a diagram of their relationship). This John's younger sister Sarah Chandler, 1661-1757 became the grandmother of the Samuel Phelps III, 1712-1795 who married John's granddaughter Priscilla Chandler, 1713-1778, Samuel's second cousin

(see http://www.milkcanpapers.com/chart/chandler0-1dl-2c.html for that diagram). First-cousin spouses John and Hannah had two sons, both of whom are are direct ancestors of ours, so that two of his great-grandchildren (Priscilla Chandler Phelps's son Joshua Phelps I, 1738-1798 and Lois Ballard, 1746-1836) were also married as second cousins

(see http://www.milkcanpapers.com/chart/chandler0dl-2c.html for that relationship). New England apparently had a very restricted gene pool.

Annis was the second child in a family of three siblings.

Her first husband, William Chandler, had been a widower for 4 months 20 days.

When Annis married her second husband, John Dane, she had been a widow 2 years 5 months 6 days; John had been a widower for at least 7 years.

When Annis married her third husband, John Parmenter, she had been a widow 1 year 11 months 5 days (Annis also survived this husband, who died in Sudbury, MA, 1 May 1671).

Annis was 80 years old when she died.

See http://www.milkcanpapers.com/bayford3.html for more information.

For more information on the Danes, see Bargeron's Genealogy Records. This site, however, has the person we have identified as Annis's oldest stepson, John Dane (1612-1684), recently a widower, rather than his father, John Dane (1590-1658), also a widower, as Annis's second husband. But then how could she have married her third husband, John Parmenter, in 1660 unless her second husband had already died? Not only that, but it seems unlikely (although not impossible) that Annis would have married this young John, the brother of Francis Dean (1615-1697), who took as his second wife, Annis's recently widowed daughter Hannah Chandler Abbott. We must then agree with the Kline research that Annis's second husband was this John Dane's father, John Dane (1590-1658). As stated on the Bargeron Genealogy homepage, "Use this information only as a guide for conducting your own research; not all of the information contained herein is adequately proven and some family connections have been compiled from secondary sources without verification. Please advise us of any errors so that we may update our files."

I have not been able to locate Fornham, Essex, England. A Fornham All Saints and a Fornham St. Martin are just to the north of Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, however.
