Antoine Bourg is the Patriarch of the Bourg/Bourque family. He was one of the first settlers in Acadia.

Antoine was born in about 1609 in France. His parents are not known.[1] Birth of 1609 is calculated according to the 1671 & 1686 census. Antoine's specific birthplace has not been identified. Suggestions include Loudun, Vienne, Poitou-Charentes, France and Martaizé in the Provice of Poitou (which is today Vienna). [2]

Proposition: due to logical conflicts with the dates found in online records, I am going to suggest that Antoine and Margeurite were the parents of Nicolas-Jacques Bourgeois dit Grandjehan ("Big John", born 1570) and Simon Bourg(eois), prominent below. I am going to suggest also that Nicolas-Jacques named one of his sons after his brother (Simon). Please contact me if you have contradicting proof.

Simon Bourg(eois) was born in 1576, in Martaizé, a village in the province of Poitou, France. Simon married Hélène Comptée, born in 1579, also in Martaizé. Simon and Hélène had two children: Antoine Bourg, born in 1609, in Martaizé; and Perrine Bourg, born in 1611. Perrine first married Simon Pelletret, and had two children: Henriette Pelletret, born in 1641, married Pierre Doucet; and Jeanne Pelletret, born in 1643, married to Barnabe Martin; then Perrine married René Landry (the elder) in 1645.

Antoine Bourg is considered to be the father of the Bourg family in Acadia. There is no actual proof of birthplace, but it is believed that he was born in Martaizé, in the province of Poitou (today, Vienne), in France. Antoine seems likely to have worked at the nearby estates of the family of Charles de Menou D'Aulnay. Aulnay, known earlier in history as Aunedonnacum, dates back to Gallo/Roman times as a station on the imperial Roman road through the area. Martaizé is about a half-hour's walk from Aulnay (to the west). This could mean that descendants of Bourgs from this area have a blend of "Celtic Gaul" and Roman ancestors.

In 1632, Commander Isaac de Razilly became the governor of Acadia. D'Aulnay, a French nobleman, was a cousin to Razilly and became involved in the logistics of supply and recruitment for the effort of (re)possession, settlement, and trade. (Scottish families in the area at the time were returned to England, interestingly foreshadowing the Deportation.) Antoine arrived in Acadia in 1632 as one of perhaps three hundred recruits on two or three ships (one being the Saint Jehan). Antoine could have been involved with any of the work going on in numerous locations in the region, and may have made more than one ocean passage.

Razilly subsequently died in 1635, and was succeeded by D'Aulnay. The work of colonization continued. In 1636, Antoine settled in Port-Royal on land, either purchased or granted, on the opposite side of the Dauphin (Annapolis River today) from where the mouth of Allain Creek is. The settlement of Port-Royal (having been moved from its original location some four miles to the west) would easily be in view across the river to the east, on the peninsula of land almost extending across the river where Annapolis Royal is situated today.

By 1642, in Port-Royal, Antoine Bourg had met and married Antoinette Landry, sister of a transport ship's captain. Unfortunately there is some debate as to the parents and birthplace of Antoinette Landry. Having distilled the information from numerous accounts, it seems likely that Antoinette Landry was born in 1618 in La Chausse, Vienne, France (near Martaizé), and that she emigrated to Port-Royal in the late 1630's, with her brother René.

Due to records lost in a fire in the early 1700's, and due to the fact that there were two men named René Landry in the early days of Port-Royal, researchers have come to no agreeable conclusion as to how the Landry name got started in Acadian history. (A quick Internet search for Jean-Claude Landry in Acadia will yield fascinating results.)

Antoinette is on the list of the "mothers of the Acadian people" as it is preserved on large yellowed paper in the Maritime Archives, Ministry of the Colonies, Paris. These women came principally from the areas of Poitou (where Martaizé is located), Berri, Bretagne and Touraine in France.

For a time, Abraham and brother Bernard were the landowners of the Bourg land on the north side of the River Dauphin. At the time this map was drawn up, the Grangers name (being the neighbours to the east) would date the map. Abraham may have been a person of standing in the community, as he could sign his name as witness at the wedding of his son Michel, on April 22, 1720, while other witnesses were unable to write their signatures. In 1725, for the Treaty of Boston, Abraham and another deputy named Prudent Robicheaux Sr. were given the job of translating the articles of the treaty into French so it could be read in both English and French to as many of the Mi'kmaq Indians as possible, wherever they might be or congregate, so the terms of the treaty would have as little chance as possible of being understood. On September 16, 1727, Bourg and François Richard and the deputies Charles Landry and Guillaume Bourgeois refused to take the new oath of allegiance to George II and were thrown into prison. Although many residents had taken the old oath unreservedly in 1695, by 1727 the Acadians were using it as a bargaining tool. They maintained they were neutral in any conflict the English had with the French and Mi'kmaq. They also insisted on the freedom to practice their own religion. The four were imprisoned for contempt and disrespect, and the following day additional exaggerated charges were added resulting in the men being imprisoned indefinitely. For Bourg, "in consideration of his great age", he would be allowed to leave the territory as soon as possible - but without his goods. As the others were released after a short while, it appears unlikely that Abraham Bourg actually left on their accord. (This story is reported on numerous webpages, with the most pleasant being this link to a readable copy of The Acadian Exiles, A chronicle of The Land of Evangeline, by Arthur G. Doughty. This image (below) is of the title page. Bourg is mentioned on pages 42 and 43.

readable copy of The Acadian Exiles Abraham Bourg did make the trip to Île Royale (Cape Breton) with his daughter Marie, her husband and small children (or to see them) perhaps as part, or instead, of his exile. (The timeline is awkward.) Marie died at Port Toulouse, Île St. Royale (St. Peter's, Cape Breton), as did her son Jean, in 1727. Abraham likely returned to Port-Royal after this happened. An oath of 1730 bears a signature which may be his. marriage witnesses were Pierre Broussard, Alexander Broussard and Abraham Bourg (age 58) Between 1713 and 1734, some 67 Acadian families chose to move from the fertile areas around Port-Royal and in the Annapolis Valley to the far less fertile but excellent fishing region of Île Royale (Cape Breton Island) - this, at the behest of the French government that Acadian families move there to join with French fishermen from Newfoundland and populate the French Island. Michel was listed at various census as a navigator, labourer, carpenter and a farmer-fisherman. He did have a boat called a "goélette" - a schooner which was definitely capable of coastal navigation, and which was used for commerce, not fishing, according to the census of 1726. He and his young family were listed in the census at Port Toulouse, Cape Breton in the years 1722, 1724 (census) and 1726. Port Toulouse, Île St. Royale (St. Peter's, Cape Breton) was the second largest settlement on Cape Breton Island at this time and is known today as St. Peter's, Nova Scotia. (Debra Burke) Michel was at Tracadie, Île St. Jean (now known as Prince Edward Island) in 1728, 1734, and 1735 with his family and his boat. They have seven children, four sons and three daughters: Michel, aged 30 years, Joseph, aged 25 years, Abraham, aged 23 years, Pierre, aged 13 years, Anne, aged 27 years, Marie, aged 19 years, and Magdelaine, aged 14 years. In live stock they have four oxen, four cows, three calves, eight ewes, fifteen pigs, two sows, seventeen fowls or chickens; and one boat. On it, they have made a clearing for the sowing of sixty-four bushels of grain, they have sown one half of this quantity. In 1755, Michel Bourg's family was caught up with the rest of the Acadian people in the expulsion. Michel was dead by 1761, but his widow was alive with their children at Nipisiguit in the area of Bathurst, New Brunswick. Anne is not listed in the census taken at Fort Beausejour in 1763, but seven adult children are. Her sons, Michel and Joseph arrived at Miquelon, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the ship "Les Deux Amis", November 11, 1765. Many Acadians fled to these islands after the war, but did not establish themselves there. Daughter Madeleine married at Miquelon in 1766. Daughter Anne and son Pierre were counted in the census of Miquelon in 1767, and the widow Anne was counted with the orphan Jean Arsenault. There are no further known records of Anne. Pierre Bourg born December 1, 1740, in St. Pierre, near Tracadie, Île St. Jean (P.E.I.). see notes above for Pierre's whereabouts (with his parents, his mother) through the census in Miquelon in 1767 returned to Cape Breton sometime between 1767 and 1772 married, in 1772, in Isle Madame, Cape Breton, to Cecile Dugas (daughter of Abraham Dugas and Margeurite Fougere) according to this (translated by Lena Samson in 2006), Pierre and his brother Joseph were two of 70 signers of the founding of Arichat parish for the names of the other 68, this document can be found online here or locally here The 70 signers of the Founding of Arichat Parish, Cape Breton CO 217, vol 104, pp 409-410. "His Majesty's faithfull Acadian subjects, Inhabiting the Isle of Madame" dated March 8, 1786, 70 heads of families, the founders of Arichat parish, thanked the lieutenant governor of Cape Breton, J.F.W. DesBarres, for the promise of land concessions, the permission to construct a church and school, and the request for tax exemptions. Stephen A. White, genealogist from the Centre d'Etudes Acadiennes at the Universite de Moncton, identified these 70 settlers in his Cahiers de la société historique acadienne, vol. XXIII, Jan. 1992, p. 4-26; titled "Les fondateurs de la paroisse d'Arichat, Cap-Breton".

Pierre, Cecile and family lived in River Bourgeois in 1813, as it is so noted on the Cape Breton Militia census. The couple may be the godparents of Martial Dugas born August 17, 1771, to Jean Dugas and Marie Landry. children : Joseph Bourg born 1777 first married in 1803, to Ruffine Landry (daughter of Pierre Landry and Anne Clerge) children by this marriage : Joseph Bourg born 1803 Simon Bourg born 1807 Ruffine Landry died about 1809. Joseph was established at River Bourgeois, Île Royale (Cape Breton Island) where, in the census of 1811, he was listed as "Joseph Boureq" - a fisherman and co-owner (with "Peter" Boureq, relation unknown, or probably his father Pierre) of a 40' 6" boat named the Nancy. Joseph's second marriage, about 1812, was to Anne Boucher (daughter of Jean Boucher and Madeleine Coste). Joseph and his father Pierre (who was living with Joseph's family at that time), were both on the list of the militia in 1813, on the British side of The War of 1812. children by the second marriage : Edward Bourg born 1812 Damien Bourg (Sr.) born 1821 married on January 24, 1848, in River Bourgeois, to Domitille Cordeau (born in 1821, daughter of Urbain Cordeau, born 1775, and Charlotte Benoit, possibly born in 1790). Marriage witnesses were Jean Landry, Jean Bourg, Placide Bourg , and Charles Cordeau. Priest's name was J. Courteau. The family lived in River Bourgeois. He was married at Port Royal (Annapolis) Nova Scotia in 1636toAntoinette Landry. He died after the 1686 Census. Antoine Bourg andAntoinette Landry had at least 14 children. It is believed that Antoine Bourg, the founder of the family inAcadia, came originally from the parish of Martaize, near Loudun,France, and arrived at Port-Royal around 1640.

He married Antoinette Landry around 1643. Their grandson,Alexandre, settled at Grand-Pré, where he was appointed a royal notaryand official surveyor of lands.

At the time of the Deportation, several Bourg families were able to escape and some of them settled at Menoudie and Memramcook in NewBrunswick.

Among the Bourg families who were victims of the Deportation there was Joseph Bourg and his wife Madeleine Hache, the parents ofFranç-Anne Bourg who is believed to be the first child to be baptizedon the Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

Some ofhis children established their homes at Cobequid. Many of hisdescendants were to flee Colbequid prior to the expulsion in order to escape the English and sought sanctuary on Isle-St. Jean which was a French Colony. bet 5 Oct 1687 & 1693 census in Port Royal, Acadia 1671, Port Royal, age 62, laboureur, living with wife, 11 children, 4married 12 cattle, 8 sheep, 4 arpents land. 1686 Port Royal, Antoine BOURC, age 95 [sic!]. Listed with wife, age80 [sic], child Marguerite, age 18. The spelling of the name "Bourg" also appears as "Bourc". This is thespelling used by Elfer Miller in his research. Arrived in Acadia about 1636. He had accepted employment as a common laborer with the d'Aulnay emigration scheme. It appears that he came on a sailing vessel called, Saint John (St. Jean). The Censusof 1671 for Port-Royal says: Antoine Bourg, labourer, age of 62 ans, son 'epouse Antoinette Landry, 53 ans, 12 betes a' cornes, 8 brebis, 4 arpents de terre. In Acadia, his area was placed as being on the river, north of Port-Royal and named "Village des Bourg" , a spot north-west of the settlement's fort. The area was associated with the family of Babineau Deslauriers, at a later time. This resulted from the marriage of d'Antoine's daughter- in-law, Marguerite Aucoin, to Jean Babineau, following the death of Francois Bourque. Bourg/Bourque
Some say that the Acadian Bourg/Bourque family is originally from Norm
andy and descended from William the Conqueror who invaded England in 1
066 and became the English king. According to this theory, the Bourg
and Bourques of Acadia were thus related to the English royal family t
hat had them deported from Acadia and are also related to the present
royal family of England.
Royalty or not, the most likely arrival date of the first Bourgs in Ac
adia was 1632, when Antoine Bourg probably arrived with Commander Isaa
c de Razilly who brought 300 "elite" men to the colony, including a do
zen or so families. Antoine was the son of Simon Bourg, and he was bo
rn in 1609 in Martaize, France, in the region of Loudon, Department d
e la Vienne. Antoine was accompanied by his parents, and at least on
e sister, Perrine.
In 1636, the Bourg family moved to Port Royal, which had once again co
me under French rule.
Antoine married Antoinette Landry in Acadia some time around 1641-43
. Antoinette was born in France in 1618 and came to Acadia with her s
ister, Perrine Landry, and two of her brothers, Rene, her twin, and Je
an Claude. Jean Claude brought his wife, Marie Salle and their child
, Rene, as well as the three children from Marie Salle's first marriag
e, Martin, Jeanne and Michelle Aucoin.
Antoine and Antoinette Bourg established themselves on the west bank o
f the R Riviere des Dauphins (Annapolis River today), and their settle
ment eventually became known as the "hameau des Bourg" or "Bourg Villa
ge" They had 12 children.
By the census of 1671, Antoine had given most of his land to a son, Je
han, who was married to Marguerite Martin and who already had two chil
dren of his own. Jehan later added six more girls and one son to his
family.
Antoine's oldest son, Francois, was also married by 1671 and lived tw
o farms down from his parents. Antoine's son, Bernard, had become fai
rly rich by the standards to the time, with 35 parents in cultivation
, two muskets, 10 cows, 40 sheep, 12 pigs and 45 fruit trees.
An interesting item concerning the Bernard Bourg family is that their
oldest daughter married Claude Dugas, while three sons and one daughte
r from Claude Dugas' first marriage to Francoise Bourgeois married thr
ee of the other children of Bernard Bourg. Thus Claude and three of h
is sons and one of his daughters had not only a parent child relations
hip, but they were also in laws.
Martin Bourg, Antoine's fourth son, married Marie Potet and had nine c
hildren, at least one of whom left descendants who eventually came to
Louisiana.
At some point in the early 1700's, a number of Bourg descendants move
d to the Ile St. Jean (Prince Edward Island) to escape English rule.
Two of these, who figure in the history of Bourg/Bourque families of L
ouisiana were Francois Louis, the son of Martin Bourg and Marie Potet
, and the grandson of Antoine's first son Francois. This grandson wa
s Jean Baptiste, the oldest son of Francois Bourg and Marguerite Boudr
ot.
Francois Louis was married to Cecile Michel. They lived at Riviere de
s Blonds on the Ile St. Jean, where they had eight children. Francoi
s Louis and his family were deported by the English from the island i
n 1758. Francois Louis died at sea at the age of 80.
Jean Baptiste Bourg married Marie Pitre, who also lived at riviere de
s Blonds until deported with their family to St. Malo. Marie Pitre Bo
urg died at sea, and Jean Baptiste and the oldest daughter, Marguerite
, died within a month of arriving in France.
One of the sons of Francois Louis, Jean Charles, died in France some t
ime between 1777 and 1785. His widow, Madeleine Blanchard, and their
family came to Louisiana from France aboard the ship "L'Amitie" in 178
5. The family established itself in the vicinity of St. Martinville (
Louisiana) and was the source of many of the Bourques in south centra
l Louisiana.
Charles, the youngest son of Jean Baptiste Bourg, was deported to Fran
ce with his family and later married Anne Thibodaux. Charles died in
France, but his widow came to Louisiana in 1785 with the surviving mem
bers of the family. They settled first in present day Assumption Pari
sh, near Plattenville. Some of these descendants made their way into
Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes and make up a portion of the Bourg f
amily in southeast Louisiana.

Antoine was the son of Simon Bourg, and he was born in 1609 in Martaize, France, in the region of Loudon, Department de la Vienne. Antoine was accompanied by his parents,and at least one sister, Perrine. [This is inaccurate]

In 1636, the Bourg family moved to Port Royal, which had once again come under French rule.

Antoine married Antoinette Landry in Acadia some time around 1641-43. Antoinette was born in France in 1618 and came to Acadia with her sister, Perrine Landry, and two of her brothers, Rene, her twin,and Jean Claude. Jean Claude brought his wife, Marie Salle and their child, Rene, as well as the three children from Marie Salle's first marriage, Martin, Jeanne and Michelle Aucoin.

Antoine and Antoinette Bourg established themselves on the west bank of the R Riviere des Dauphins (Annapolis River today), and their settlement eventually became known as the "hameau des Bourg" or "Bourg Village" They had 12 children.
By the census of 1671, Antoine had given most of his land to a son, Jehan, who was married to Marguerite Martin and who already had two children of his own. Jehan later added six more girls and one son to his family.

Antoine's oldest son, Francois, was also married by 1671 and lived two farms down from his parents. Antoine's son, Bernard, had become fairly rich by the standards to the time, with 35 parents in cultivation, two muskets, 10 cows, 40 sheep, 12 pigs and 45 fruit trees.

An interesting item concerning the Bernard Bourg family is that their oldest daughter married Claude Dugas, while three sons and one daughter from Claude Dugas' first marriage to Francoise Bourgeois married three of the other children of Bernard Bourg. Thus Claude and three of his sons and one of his daughters had not only a parent child relationship, but they were also in laws.

Martin Bourg, Antoine's fourth son, married Marie Potet and had nine children, at least one of whom left descendants who eventually came to Louisiana.

At some point in the early 1700's, a number of Bourg descendants moved to the Ile St. Jean (Prince Edward Island) to escape English rule.

Two of these, who figure in the history of Bourg/Bourque families of Louisiana were Francois Louis, the son of Martin Bourg and Marie Potet, and the grandson of Antoine's first son Francois. This grandson was Jean Baptiste, the oldest son of Francois Bourg and Marguerite Boudrot.

Francois Louis was married to Cecile Michel. They lived at Riviere des Blonds on the Ile St. Jean, where they had eight children. Francois Louis and his family were deported by the English from the island in 1758. Francois Louis died at sea at the age of 80.

Jean Baptiste Bourg married Marie Pitre, who also lived at riviere des Blonds until deported with their family to St. Malo. Marie Pitre Bourg died at sea, and Jean Baptiste and the oldest daughter, Marguerite, died within a month of arriving in France.
One of the sons of Francois Louis, Jean Charles, died in France some time between 1777 and 1785. His widow, Madeleine Blanchard, and their family came to Louisiana from France aboard the ship "L'Amitie" in 1785. The family established itself in the vicinity of St. Martinville (Louisiana) and was the source of many of the Bourques in south central Louisiana.

Charles, the youngest son of Jean Baptiste Bourg, was deported to France with his family and later married Anne Thibodaux. Charles died in France, but his widow came to Louisiana in 1785 with the surviving members of the family. They settled first in present day Assumption Parish, near Plattenville. Some of these descendants made their way into Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes and make up a portion of the Bourg family in southeast Louisiana.

year. Antoine was the progenitor of the Bourg line in Acadia. Some of
his children established their homes at Cobequid. Many of his
descendants were to flee Colbequid prior to the expulsion in order to
escape the English and sought sanctuary on Isle-St. Jean which was a

Antoine Bourg & Antoinette Landry had 13 children. ANTOINE Borough-bourque Antoine Bour or Borough 1st, was born in France in 1609, according to the census of 1671 and in 1591, according to that of 1686. Some believe qu.il is originating in Martaizé, small commune located in the province of Poitou, aujourd.hui in the department of Vienna. We know qu.Antoine came in Acadie at the beginning of the years 1640, or perhaps even between 1632 and 1336. About 1642, it marries with Port-Royal, Antoinette Landry, born in 1620, girl of the ancestors, Jean-Claude Landry and Marie Sallée, and s.ur of Rene Landry married to Perrine Bourg, the s.ur d.Antoine Bourg. In Acadie, the household d.Antoine Borough and d.Antoinette Landry are fixed on northern bank of the river of Port-Royal and give its name tothe village of the Borough. This village is located at a short distance, in the North-West of the Fort old man of the Capital. Village, the Borough have a splendid sight on the human regrouping of the Fort. There are established Mélanson, Boudrot, Vigneau, Bergeron and d.autres, because "people of the Fort" come d.un little everywhere, being French soldiers or, and especially, craftsmen of all the utility trades. With the census of 1686, Jean Bour is 40 years old and Marguerite Martin is 42 years old, with Port-Royal. Their daughter Magdeleine Bour is 8 years old and it continues the bond of descent by marrying Pierre Leblanc, in 1694, wire of the ancestor Daniel Leblanc and Francoise Gaudet. The second child, a girl, the sixth of th e couple, named Jeanne Bour, born in 1653. She marries about 1669, with Port-Royal, Pierre Comeau, known as l.Esturgeon, born in 1653, also in Port-Royal, wire elder of the ancestors of Comeau, Pierre and Pink Bayols. With the census of 1686, Pierre Comeau and Jeanne Bour are 32 years old. Then, the third child who concerns us, the eighth of the couple Antoine/Antoinette, Hughette Bour, born in 1657.She marries about 1676, with Port-Royal, Sebastien Brun, wire of the Brun ancestors, Vincent and Marie Brault. The first nominal census, in Acadie, in 1671, us shows Bour; Antoine Bour, the father with his Michel sons, Bernard, François and Jean Bour, forming as many households. With the acadian census of 1686, Antoine Bour is 95 years old and Antoinette Landry is 80 years old. The name Bourc, n.est qu.une simple typographical error. L.étymologie-même of the name Bour, in Dict. French d.ancian, also means "fraud: catch "; it comes from the Latin-popular word "will burra". The name Bour, can also come from Flemish "boer" which decides "bour" while meaning "country". The word Bourg means "large village, which comes from the Germanic word" borc "which means castle-extremely.
