About Antonio Martin de Aguillar

The immigrant settler of the AGUILLARD family that settled in the Opelousas area appears to have been ANTONIO MARTIN AGUIAR of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He was married to FRANCISCA MARIA RODRIGUEZ.

Neither they nor their two sons, FRANCISCO MARTIN AGUIAR and JOSEPH AGUIAR are listed on any of the ships' lists.

However, Francisco married Louise Luvigni on March 17, 1783 at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans and was described as a native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with his parents identified and also native to that city.

Joseph at his married in Pointe Coupee in 1792 is identified as the son of Antoine Aguiar and Francoise Rodrigue, all natives of the Isle of Tenerife.

The father does not appear at either of his sons' marriages; nor does their mother. Both boys married French girls.

There is a death of an ANTONIO MARTIN AGUIAR in 1788 who was buried at new Galvez; his parents are identified as "Dono N. Aguiar" and "Francisca Marie Roldana", natives of Matanzas on the Island of Tenerife. In the baptism of a grandchild, both Antonio and Francisca Aguiar are identified as natives of Matanzas. BUT THIS MAN IS A BACHELOR!! Could he have disowned his sons and moved from New Orleans where there are records of an Antoine/Antonia Aguir/Aiguiller after the death of his wife and "taken the veil"?

it is highly likely that the boys came with their parents in 1777-83: Francisco was born c1765 and Joseph's age is indiscernible from the records.

There is an Antonio Aguilar buried in St. Louis #2, Square 2, Aisle 1, West Vault, no date, "Sociedad Ibera de Beneficiencia Mutua"
