Yeoman", dated 24 May 1753, proved 27 Sep 1753, names wife Mary Adams; sons John, Samuel, Archelaus; Mary & Elizabeth the Daughters of my Son Stephen deceased; daughters Sarah Wadley, Mary Morrill; sons Samuel and Archelaus to be executors.
Note: Several older sources show incorrect marriages for Archelaus that are obviously wrong.
"Descendants of Robert Adams" by Joshua Coffin, NEHGR, p. 11:55-6, shows only marriage #1 and #2 for Archelaus and gives wives #3 (Dorothy) and #4 (Mary) to his son. Source:Cutter, William Richard. New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, p. 3:1389, gets marriage 1, 2, and 3 right, but gives wife 4 to the son.
First of all, the son can be ruled out as a potential husband for all these marriages. He was b. 1714, married in Salisbury in 1737 to Mercy Dow, who is explicitly recorded as the mother of his children born in 1738, 1739, 1742, 1743, 1745, 1747, 1749, 1752, 1755 (twins), 1759, and she survived him, dying in 1784 as his widow. The son's age at death, 69 in 1783, confirms he is the son born in 1714. (See VR Salisbury, p. 261 for the marriage, p. 11-12 for the births of children, p. 523 for death records of Mercy and Archelaus). So the son was married to a different woman before both marriages #3 and #4, and was married to the same wife his whole life, leaving no possibility that he married either of these women.
Second, all the later marriages of the father are recorded, and align neatly with the deaths of his previous wives, making him the best candidate husband to start with. His third wife Dorothy, in particular, can be shown to be a very poor match for the son, since her age at death suggests a birth in 1679, which matches the father (born about 1673) much better than the son (b. 1714).
Source:Crane, Ellery Bicknell. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County Massachusetts, p. 2:49, says Alice Piper m. 1726 Archelaus Adams of Newbury. This is repeated in a couple of Piper Genealogies (Genealogy of Solomon Piper, p. 8, and Genealogy of Elisha Piper, p. 93). Given the birth of his son in 1714, this could only be the father referred to here. However, investigation of the vital records of Ipswich clearly show it was John Adams who married Alice Piper and had children with her in Ipswich. Source:Cutter, William Richard. New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, p. 3:1389, says this John was the son of Archelaus, b. 1704, who married Alice Piper.
