About Archibald Douglas of Pittendriech
Archibald Douglas died at of Pittendriech, Midlothian, Scotland; He was illegitimate.1
- parents are said to be James (4th Earl Of Morton) Douglas by a Mistress Cullen. He was beheaded on 2 June 1581 for the murder of Lord Darnley.

(124) James, Fourth Earl Of Morton, second son of No. 121. He married, before 1543, Elizabeth, second of the three daughters and co-heirs of James, third Earl of Morton (No. 261). This lady was long insane, and died September 1574. After his marriage he was recognised as Master of Morton, and succeeded to the Earldom on the death of his father-inlaw in 1553.
In 1564 his right to the Earldom of Morton was confirmed by a grant, with the following remainders:—
- i. To himself and the heirs male of his body. (As he had no legitimate son this clause failed.)
- II. To his nephew, Archibald, eighth Earl of Angus. (He succeeded as sixth Earl of Morton.)
He was Chancellor of Scotland 1562-67, and 1567-72. He took a leading part in the murder of Rizzio, 1566. Regent of Scotland 1572-78. He was found guilty of being concerned in the murder of Lord Darnley, and executed 2nd June 1581, without legitimate issue.
He had, however, four natural sons :—
- (a) James (No. 125).
- (b) Archibald Douglas of Pittendreich, who married Elizabeth,daughter of William Sutherland of Duffus.
- (c) George Douglas, a cripple, living 1611.
- (d) William Douglas.
