About Aristides E.P. Albert, Jr

Just a thought: Did AEP's daughter Pocahantas's name have a connection to Octavia's mother, who was a Native American?

So is it a reasonable assumption that he is related to AEP--something worth pursuing further??? ________________________________________

Since he was 48 when he died he would have been born in 1896. He lived in San Fran. He was a porter so he must have been black. AEP Sr. Was known to travel to CA by train.

[Question: Is this AEP Albert related to the family?]

Bagley Utah Train Wreck, 1944 Posted October 8th, 2007 by Stu Beitler<http://www3.gendisasters.com/users/stu-beitler>

He was born Jan. 24, 1929, in Trenton, N. J. He had been attending school in Salt Lake City and lived there with his mother at 963 East Fifth South. He and his mother were en route to Berkeley, Calif., to join MR. SEAMAN, who is a civilian accountant working in the Oakland naval supply depot. The mother was injured in the wreck, but was taken on to San Francisco. The boy attended schools in Freehold, N. J., and was a member of the Episcopal church.

Survivors include his parents and one sister, LOIS MARIE SEAMAN, whose home is at 501 Fourth avenue, Salt Lake.

The sister came to the mortuary, 529 Twenty-fifth, to identify the body.

Casualty Lists of S. P. Wreck Still Incomplete Weary railroad officials and army and navy authorities today continued to add to the still incomplete list of casualties in the tragic wreck of the Pacific Limited early yesterday, as grim rescue squads hacked and burned their way through the twisted scrap to find possible new victims.

A Southern Pacific representative said that most of the civilian dead were still unidentified early today, according to the United Press. Names of most of the military and naval dead were withheld pending notification of next of kind[sic].

The list of dead and wounded, gathered from various sources, follows:

Bambi was the only child of AEP and Octavia Albert. Believe AEP had several children by his second wife – they would have been Teddy, Hazel, Albert & Andrew.

Best regards.

Pacific Limited Crash Claims 48 Lives

Southern Pacific Trains Collide; 79 Reported Hurt

Fog Reported at Bagley, Scene Of Railway Wreck

An unusually long and heavy freight train lumbered out of Ogden early Sunday morning moving westward toward Great Salt lake.

Later, the first section of the Pacific Limited, consisting of 18 cars, most of them filled with passengers, military and civilian, departed, following the freight train.

Shortly thereafter, the second section of the Pacific limited, 20 cars loaded with express and mail and, it is reported, two cars of explosives, followed the first section.

The freight train developed trouble.

This trouble required the first section of the limited to stop and then proceed slowly.

The second section, seemingly ignorant of the conditions ahead, plunging westward at a normal rate of speed, plowed into the slowly moving first section, causing one of the nation's greatest train wrecks.[see link for continuation of article]

The crash killed 48 (some sources 50[2]) including over 35 military personnel[1] and injured 79 and involved Southern Pacific's Pacific Limited as it crossed The Great Salt Lake on the Lucin Cutoff.[3] It had left Chicago at 10 a.m. Friday, bound for San Francisco[4] and normally travelled in one long section but on this occasion it was split into two with the passenger train running ahead of the mail express. Early that morning an unusually long and heavy freight train developed problems (unofficially a hot box[5]) whilst travelling west from Ogden. This required the first section of the Pacific Limited which comprised 18 cars headed by SP GS-3 No.4425[6] to stop and then proceed with caution. The second section, comprising 20 cars headed by SP Mt-4 No.4361[6][7] apparently unaware of the problems ahead continued at full speed.[8] At Bagley a siding, 17 miles west of Ogden at 5.14 a.m. in thick fog the mail express plowed into the Pullman car at the back of the passenger train. The Ogden Standard Examiner reported "The force of the impact sent another sleeping car smashing through the dining car and farther ahead slammed one coach into the wooden coach ahead of it. Cars of the mail express section piled up crossways of the track behind the engine, some of them sliding down the causeway embankment into water. Most of the dead were taken from the rear Pullman car and from the telescoped coach"[4] At the site of the crash the tracks run along a causeway across desolate mud and shallow water so all rescue efforts had to come by rail. Fortunately two hospital cars were included in the passenger train manned by members of the Medical Corps and tended the injured until rescue trains arrived from Ogden.[5] The official enquiry into the accident 'found that this accident was caused by failure to properly control the speed of the following train in accordance with signal indications.'[6]
