Additional Biographical Information:
Elderly man killed on smallholding.
"When I took the shirt out of his mouth, I tried to wake him up, but I could see he wasn't right. It was too late. "
So had a sad Mr. Boytjie de Paiva of Vanderbijlpark told after the murder this weekend on his 79-year-old father, Mr. Armando de Paiva.
This is the second parent he has lost in so many months after a blood clot in the lung had claimed his mother, Olinda.
De Paiva Sr., a pensioner, died in the early hours of the morning after two men broke into his smallholding in Northdene, Vanderbijlpark, and tied him up.
De Paiva and his father were neighbors.
"His legs were bound with a belt and his mouth tied with a shirt. There was also a shirt around his neck. The way the shirt was wrapped, lets me think they strangled him," said De Paiva.
He found his father after a nightmare that began at 3:00 with the barking of dogs.
"I didn't see anything at all and then told my wife (Yolande) to switch on the outdoor lights," said De Paiva.
He walked to his father's house and saw the lights on and the lounge window's burglar bars broken open.
"I got my revolver and my wife woke my nephew, Armand, 14, to go with me. As I entered the room, one man attacked me. We wrestled and he tried to take the revolver friom me. "
De Paiva fell on the bed during the struggle, saw the second burglar and shouted for Armand to stay away. The second burglar first ran behind Armand, but later fled.
When De Paiva tried to shoot one of the burglars in the struggle, the shot did not go off and the burglar jumped through the window and ran away.
