• Lieutenant in 1869 in the service of the Royal Artillery.
• Fought in the Zulu War in 1879, where he was mentioned in despatches.

• In 1880 he was summoned to Balmoral Castle to explain to Queen Victoria the circumstances of the Prince Imperial's death in the Zulu War.
