About Arthur C. Parker / Gáwasowaneh
Arthur C. Parker was an American archaeologist, historian, folklorist, museologist and noted authority on Native American culture. Of Seneca and Scots-English descent, he was director of the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences from 1924 to 1945, when he developed its holdings and research into numerous disciplines for the Genesee Region. He was an honorary trustee of the New York State Historical Association. In 1935 he was elected first president of the Society for American Archaeology. (Wikipedia, CC BY-SA)
Note: Parker was culturally and genetically Seneca, but enrollment into the Seneca Nation of Indians is based on the mother's enrollment status. Since Parker's mother was not Seneca, he was not eligible for tribal enrollment. Circa 1903, Parker "was adopted into the Seneca Bear Clan and given one of the 'free' names within the clan set. ... The name Parker was given, Gáwasowaneh, meaning 'Big Snow Snake,' was ceremonial and bore no specific personal reference." (Porter, pp. 51-52)
